Pros

- Entry-level employees in operations (van drivers, warehouse crew) are generally down-to-earth, good people - You can take pride in recycling responsibly and keep tons of stuff out of landfills - Decent pay for van drivers ($24/hour w/benefits)

Cons

- Seniority and efficiency are not financially rewarded or incentivized. Van drivers who have been there over a year are making $24/hour, the same pay as brand new drivers. Van drivers who are doing 20 stops/hour are paid the same as those doing the minimum of 10 stops/hour. Pay for warehouse associates is $20/hour, which is hardly a living wage in Seattle anymore - There is no focus on or discussion of DEI in the leadership team - I worked with Ridwell for 16 months and they never talked about it. Nearly all of Ridwell's leadership is white males - Managers insult van drivers behind their backs and blames them for things that aren't their fault. The AM Ops Supervisor said "some of our van drivers are kind of stupid" in a meeting on 4/8 with 10 employees present, and when I challenged them on that they said to me " our Fleet is stupid and lazy". That is incredibly unprofessional and unfair to say, so I reported this to their manager. I was fired one week later - Managers lie and don't follow through on their commitments. The Operations Manager committed to four meetings with me to give me performance feedback in my new role as AM Operations Lead. He blew off three of those meetings, then blamed me for allegedly not improving my performance and used that as a pretext for firing me - Leadership is obsessed with money and reducing the "cost per stop" and talks about it constantly - way more than they talk about improving operations or becoming more mission-aligned. Ridwell recycles most of what they collect, but tons more could be recycled with a little extra effort but ends up in the trash because their profits are tied to collecting stuff, not recycling it

Ridwell Response

Hi there, To start, we want to apologize for your experience as a Ridwell employee. We want to create a better experience for our team of amazing people who make a significant difference daily. As a new and growing startup, we often allow people to step into leadership roles. Sometimes this works out great! And sometimes, as in your case, it doesn't. Since your departure, the company has up-leveled our investment in our people, starting with hiring a Head of People, so there is someone who is dedicated to the employee experience and leadership development. While we still have a ways to go, there has been much progress over the last several months. The main focus of the People Team at Ridwell is to elevate the employee experience to mirror the member experience. This focus is present and vocal at the Executive table. A note about how we value DEI at Ridwell - DEI is top of mind in our hiring, promotion, and development practices. This value may not be vocalized at the morning huddles, but it is very much a work in process. Diversity is more than meets the eye. What might appear as an "all-white male leadership team" could be different from your perception. We respect the privacy of our people and don't necessarily shout from the rooftops all the different ways Diversity is present. And finally, thank you for your Advice to Management. We have done much of what you have suggested and are continuing to work hard to make Ridwell a great place to work.

Company values "Brand" over people

Pros

- Warehouse employees and drivers are great people who are taken advantage of and do 90% of the work and produce more than 90% of the profits.

Cons

- Management is disengaged from daily operations, yet explain how their decisions drive the company. They are out of touch and the things that need desperate attention are not addressed because they are less glamorous tasks and it's designated to new hires who are not familiar with the company. - Ops chief, Kjiel, said in my interview that the most important asset to the company is the "Brand"... you know.... the white boxes that go on porches.... thats the most important asset to this company apparently. ....Needless to say, I was shocked at this answer because he blatantly does not give a care in the world about the people below him and the work they do, the profits they make, their time and lives they sacrifice to make someone money. I clarified and asked, "what about your labor force? Do they not provide the company with the means of production, and therefore profits and growth?" He said, "oh, I mean yeah that goes without saying....." but does it? Don't you need to say you value your labor that your exploiting? Or are we just past caring, and we go straight to exploitative white guy behavior? In fact, he was worried that I called him out and then he had the audacity to mansplain how they employ unskilled labor as a large part of their company's model to make sure they have the people they need to get the work accomplished, since, you know, it's not very safe and doesn't pay very well. He does not know what that work is, and when he called it "unskilled labor" I tasted metal. He shows up in flip flops to a location that recycles batteries and lightbulbs, moves pallets of recycled materials, and more. He is an entitled brat who cost the company a good person, because I was going to work hard for Ridwell; I really, really wanted the job. How bad you ask? I went through 9 interviews in 4 months. I waited patiently as the start up asked me to. I canceled trips for interviews that lasted 9 minutes. They did not give me the time of day and I should have withdrew my interest - but I wanted to work in waste and I thought this model was very interesting and had a lot of potential. I do not want to work for a man who would have claimed my work as his own, and we all worked/already work for one of these Princes. Well, Ridwell's Prince is Kjiel and this company has gone through more regional and operations managers than it had to. I was there for less than 2 months and I saw 3 regional/ops people leave this job. However, because Kjiel knows someone high up in the company, as the nepotism was physically dripping from his himbo hat (the 2020 equivalent of a trucker hat), this company will not do well in the future and management will continue to drop like flies. This Prince is out for his own gain, Ridwell should, well, get rid of him. Also, this company does not hire from within. I know many people taht had worked there longer than a year and still do the same thing in the warehouse. They have not been given the opportunity to grow with the company bc the company is after money and they value these people soooo little that they keep them where they are bc their hands moving all day somehow is more important than the knowledge they have gained over the last year. Promote the people that know how your company works. What's so hard about that? I'm grossed out by this company and you should be too.

Pros

Personal satisfaction knowing you are helping to reduce the amount of repurposable items ending up in landfills, helping different local shelters collect needed items, working with some co-workers who share the same environmentally sustainable mindset, and health benefits.

Cons

Miscommunication/mismanagement on a very regular basis(went through 3 managers in my year there because they were being overworked and underpaid as well), lack of respect for employees that work twice as hard as others(don't expect more compensation, that was a joke conversation), unsafe environment for warehouse workers, saw many collected items become moldy/unusable due to inability to store them properly or miscommunication with collection partners which was so disheartening personally), styrofoam pollution outside of warehouse and going into water system. Complete disregard for your life outside of work and will overwork you at any opportunity given since they continued expanding their customer base without having enough workers. No phone bill compensation even though as a driver that is your main tool(ended up having to upgrade my plan since prior I hardly used my phone data). Acts as if there is room to expand but unwilling to formally train anyone for a necessary length of time in a new position.
