Pros

Music shops as a musician will always be fun here and there. The Sales staff and shop managers were great to work with. Of the rare 5 minutes a day you get to 'practice' (as opposed to the 'hour' a day stated in the employee contract) there are some great instruments and scope to learn new instruments during your working hours.

Cons

The 'powers that be' have zero understanding, and/or have probably forgotten what it is like to be at the forefront of such a business that makes hundreds of mistakes with hundreds of customer each week. Little training (without re-jigging the whole company around). Terrible pay/rewards for working hard (non-existent bonus schemes that are continually promised). Terrible treatment of shop staff and no acknowledgement of hard or extra work, ever. Expecting way too much of 'Sales assistants' - being asked to do as much as some assistant managers/managers in other companies. All shop staff are run ragged and left clearing up the mess being created by head office and some warehouse staff.

The Wolves of the Music Business

Pros

The staff with which I worked with at my time at Rimmers Music were/are truly acceptional and understanding people; willing to get their hands dirty when it came to the work-load and easy to develop and good relationship with both in and outside of work.

Cons

PLEASE READ UNTIL THE END: The job itself was very enjoyable but was outweighed by the unreasonable and unbearable expectations of the senior management. In my time working for this company, I was pushed towards taking customer details (some of which had bought only so much as a plectrum) and hassling them by any means necessary to the point of harassment, in an effort to lure them into spending thousands of pounds. In my personal experiences with the senior management I have witnessed them use manipulation tactics to the point of intimidation towards the managers and supervisors in attempts to coax them into meeting impossible standards. In the sales meetings I attended, I have witnessed nothing short of bullying as a means to an end of making the management more money. Cameras have now been fitted within the stores (recording video and audio) to satisfy the management that their staff are constantly trying to meet their unrealistic sales targets, in some cases they have called up stores on the phone when an employee has taken too long relieving themselves. Aside from this, there was a continuous steam of mess left by head-office that staff on the ground-floor were expected to clear up, including some extremely angry customers who had been palmed off on a store who had previously had no dealing with their grievances whatsoever. Employees were expected to know every feature on every instrument in the entire shop with little to no training at all; the bosses would frequently carry out surprise visits to test staff of their product knowledge as well as testing them in 'sales meetings' to the point of humiliation. Despite all of this, employees were also paid appallingly and during my time working for this company I have known people take on new and higher job roles whom have never been paid the difference.

Horrible company to work for

Pros

Nice staff and customers. Could be an enjoyable pace to work.

Cons

Worked for Rimmers last year and was a terrible company owned by a paranoid bully. We were told to do fake reviews on different sites and only leave 5 stars. Made to cold call customers and keep ringing them again and again even when customers told us not to, the company did not care about the customers. No staff were trusted from management and constantly made to feel bad, it was difficult to get it right or know what we should do. They did not appreciate any staff and a very negative place to work in. Terrible pay and very little incentives. No proper lunch breaks and very understaffed.
