Pros

Scientific aims are great, but made to feel like you are lucky to be working here. Staff members are usually very friendly and helpful. Wide range of scientific equipment available but not always the staff to use them!

Cons

Lack of transparency and openness regarding the progression of staff, management decisions, and economic relationships with the commercial arm Rothamsted Enterprises, coupled with increased work load on staff to provide business services, as those in the business services do not seem to have the time to follow our specific requests. Overall management are forcing a toxic competitive culture between staff members rather than collaboration. No inflation linked pay rises for around 5 years maybe longer.

Pros

friendly and super smart colleagues, crucial crop science research covered, excellent facilities, amazing people, and general infrastructure, decent pay, excellent social life

Cons

Long term job security is inconsistent (has been great for me but occasionally erratic short contracts for other colleagues), Research payscale lags behind industrial/commercial options, career progression slow

Our contracts are based on funding available so unfortunately some of our positions are on a short-term contract due to financial constrictions. Rothamsted Research is a not for profit charity and therefore we need to ensure that our pay scales reflect this.

Pros

Great facilities, you can go from bench to field here.

Cons

Absolutely awful staff morale for 3+ years now. Redundancies keep happening, no forward movement despite multiple reviews of the scientific programme. No career progression, below average pay when compared to other institutes and universities. Low numbers of women getting promotions or in higher management (in the science departments). No matter how many hours postdocs slog out, we are never rewarded, or even acknowledged.
