      Pros

      Big employer and a good name for your CV. Excellent BIM knowledge and training… but is it worth having no morals?

      Cons

      Ryder is basically cliques rather than teams, including directors. You are either in them or you aren’t, and if you aren’t be prepared to be a scapegoat. The company’s growth reflects a growing business not an architectural practice with integrity. Diversity is seriously lacking, and the dog eat dog culture is not to be desired.

      Massive lack of progression and people not being recognised by management for their contributions to the workplace. Pay is well below industry average.

      Pros

      The company is large and gets a lot of work in the North East. It is possible to move between offices, including some opportunities abroad. You can have a good experience if you are put in a good team.

      Cons

      The designs are, with a few exceptions, mediocre. Less experienced architects start working here with enthusiasm and new ideas, only to find out ‘that’s not how we do things here’ and they can either fall in line or work elsewhere. Management and policies are very old-fashioned. There is no HR department, despite having over 100 employees. People know better than to speak out- they just keep quiet and complain about a decision afterwards. This is a recipe for disaster.
