Great Company When Times are Good

Pros

Paid benefits. Somewhat flexible work schedule. Nice people. Supportive environment. Of course this all depends who your manager is. Unique product and very smart people working here. Overall a great company to work for.

Cons

Appraisal system is bad. Lots of time is wasted on it (Weeks to months) and its so massive and complex they require a training course for it. SBM tends to waste money on things like the appraisal system, 4DX, and other personal development programs that are ultimately abandoned. No raises or bonuses for years due to the market down turn. Constant threat of getting laid off due to lack of projects. Struggle for power seems to exist b/w RC's.

Upheaval and uncertainty

Pros

Great location and quality of life outside the office; interesting projects in a wide range of countries - good international exposure. Colleagues tend to be friendly and fun to work with.

Cons

The future of the company is uncertain and unclear. Recent years have seen SBM take one hit after another (outside and internal investigations, failed projects and increasingly poor relations with big clients) - it is not clear how much more this company can withstand. Management seems intent on restructuring and downsizing the company. The company work culture is difficult. The general attitude is to blame first and ask questions later. The only way to make it in the company is to cover yourself and make sure you can point fingers at a colleague if an error (no matter how minor) is made or something goes wrong. It currently seems that the most certain way to advance in the company is to be Dutch or French. New management has been brought in throughout the company. Expectations, procedures, reporting lines, authority levels, etc. are constantly in flux and ever changing. Rather than streamlining procedures and processes to make the company responsive to client demands, internal processes and approval procedures are increasingly bureaucratic and cumbersome. New levels of middle-management and review and approval procedures are constantly added with the main effect being to irritate clients and make everyone's job more difficult.. Pay is low for the demands made on employees. The joke in the company is that SBM really stands for "Stay a Bit More." The pay in Monaco is low relative to the rest of the industry and the cost of living in the area.
