I worked at SBS full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Some very talented colleagues, and you usually get paid on time.

    Cons

Very Sydney-centric, which is unhealthy for a national broadcaster. The Sydney-based newsroom management lacks vision, and is non-encouraging except to a handful of favourites. As well, it has little idea what happens in its Melbourne office. It encourages 'spies' to provide information about its Melbourne staff, which turns up as anonymous (and often groundless) 'feedback' in assessments - with no right of appeal or ability to challenge. Beware.

I have been working at SBS full-time

    Pros

    There are no positives here

    Cons

This is a review of the SBS newsroom. It is a completely chaotic workplace, where staff are treated badly. Most journalists don’t have rounds and cover everything, there’s no originality and as others have said, an over reliance on wire services, with no time given to research or investigate stories or establish contacts — it is utter chaos. Management values quantity over quality and you end up spitting out story after story. There’s no room to progress, and the management style is top down and completely dated (old boys club as others have said). SBS receives government funding to reflect the country’s diversity, but in my view there’s no real diversity as most journalists with a ‘diverse’ background are second or third generation Australians who lived here all their lives. Those with a ‘real’ diverse of non-English background usually work in behind the scenes roles (IT, marketing) or in the language department, which says it all. The HR department is utterly useless and as others have said it is a bullies heaven, so never complain about bullying as it will backfire. Expect to be heavily underpaid and spend hours in traffic to get to the North Sydney location.

    Cons

Are you a bully? You don't have any formal qualification? You have no respect for people whatsoever? You believe you can stand on others shoulders to get yourself to the top?? CONGRATULATIONS!! SBS is for you, you'll get to the very top of the organisation!!

I have been working at SBS full-time

    Pros

You won't find an organisation you'll be more proud to work for. Plenty of people at SBS are there for the same reasons. People smile at you when you tell them where you work.

    Cons

Poor resourcing, poor facilities, equipment etc. Extremely restrictive budget environment, resourcing etc. Digital teams struggle and are under-resourced. Many people are there because they can enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle and worklife balance. This is great for a while, until you actually want to get something done. Almost ZERO career opportunity or advancement - terrible HR department.
