Pros
The art displayed is good
Cons
Hong Gyu Shin has a bad reputation in the nyc artworld which i learned after finishing my internship and interviewing elsewhere. People interviewing me at serious big name galleries would say that Hong is known to not pay his artists or pay them late. After working at other places I now see how corrupt Hong’s operation is. Real galleries use art handlers, pay interns (at least giving them lunch & travel stipends). Also saw he was looking for a gallery worker on NyFA and paying them below minimum wage. Comes out to 25k a year for over 40 hours a week. You could make more at any other gallery. He complains about people not wanting to work hard but the rich spoiled owner never worked a day in his life. While interning, there was a gallery manager there who was the only saving grace during my time. But now that the manager is gone and you would have to deal with Hong, run! And no one should take that job on NYFA, save your time. Another big problem is that you have to install, deinstall the art here and paint the walls. He won’t hire anyone to do this because he cuts corners and is miserly. They call him “cut corners” Hong out in the realworld or “cheap Hong”. Funny enough Hong says he will be the next big thing. But he has burned so many bridges that no one wants to work with him. He has never had a job and treats people like garbage. He scams and thinks it won’t catch up to him. I also would say do not buy art from this place—it is stored in the dusty basement and handled by interns who are not professional art handlers. He also recently had a show at a museum showing his private collection that he made the interns still there buy macdonalds burgers for the opening to. Aside from the obvious Trump knock off it was low class and I hear that everyone at the opening made fun of it and was offended. The burgers were cold. The Nassau Museum show was a bust because he is cheap. He didnt want to pay for catering. This is a problem with his mindset: he uses people and cuts corners. “Cheap Hong” is a good name for him. Hope the New York Department of Labor shuts this place down.
