A blight on the industry

Pros

Camaraderie with other junior members of staff. That is all.

Cons

Unfortunately this small organisation has an imbalance of personnel. On the one hand, there are a group of directors that interfere with, bully and harass their staff, and on the other hand, there are the staff. Their portfolio is limited, as are the training and development opportunities. If you are an experienced producer and can get a good deal for a few months then do it. If you are a grad then STAY AWAY. It's painful to think that the first experience of the conference industry for a grad could be SMi. It represents only the worst aspects of the industry. It's not all vitriol, small mindedness and cheap delivery. Plus other companies will treat you with respect as a proper project manager with proper responsibility.

A company with a justified toxic reputation.

Pros

- You'll meet some interesting people at the company. - You will learn a lot, however long you last at the company. Mainly good tips on what not to do if you ever get into management.

Cons

- Abysmal and completely counter-productive management. The old saying that "people leave managers, not jobs" describes the situation perfectly. Calling them management is almost a compliment. - The horrendous management leads to an absurdly high turnover rate. The employees that are left are completely overworked and then blamed when both their events and the ones they are looking after do badly. - Employees are treated like potential criminals. Emails, web activity and your personal social media accounts will all be looked at by management. You would think they would have better things to do, but apparently not. - Image is a massive concern for management (10 years too late?), a recent effort to get staff to write about positive experiences about the company has been initiated in a pitiful effort to give the company some good PR. A fun thing to do is to watch the staff profiles on the website and see how quickly they disappear and get replaced. Oh, and management writing 5* reviews on this website is fooling nobody (it would help if they cut out the grammatical mistakes -- that really gives you away!) - SMi has no neutral HR department where you can go to air grievances (about management for instance). I'm not sure one person can constitute a department, but either way it means there is a self-perpetuating negative cycle at this company where nothing ever changes. - Please do ask any recruiter about the turnover and culture at SMi if you think these reviews are exaggerating or just people who have been scorned by management. SMi is a joke in the industry and well known for its practices.

Pros

if you like being treated like meat then this is the place for you

Cons

Appalling management, terrible training, no trust or confidence in the staff which is why there is always such high turn over of staff. I urge everyone reading this to avoid ever working here. You will regret it.

SMi Group Response

It is a shame you have decided to launch a personal attack on individuals within SMi. As a company we have been trading for nearly 25 years. The vast majority of our events have been running for between 10 and 20 years. The events we offer are well respected in the industry's we serve. All staff are trained when they join SMi. For a producer, which you claim to be, this includes having a mentor who is either a director, department head or a more senior team member. The management team are in place because of their experience in this industry which amounts to about 100 years of experience between them. Finally we are a meritocracy with the vast majority of our staff having worked at SMi for many years and working their way up within the organization. My door is always open as you would know as you claim to be currently working at the company, so I look forward to hearing your issues in person..
