So much potential ruined by mis-management

Pros

The employees were (past tense as so many have now left) incredibly talented and smart, we had a good camaraderie. The product and packaging are really good.

Cons

This is a B corp company that did not take Covid seriously. Throughout 2020 there was never a plan communicated and as recently as 6 months ago the staff wasn’t alerted that someone on the team had tested positive. This is a company that claims they are “woman led”, but has a majority male leadership team. I have attended meetings in which a man argued with a woman over how her own body works. The undertones of misogyny are ever present. This is a company where the founders are obsessed with being liked and having their ideas validated. If they feel someone doesn’t like an idea they will call them, but they don’t want feedback, they want to convince you why they are right. This is a company that rewards smiling but censures common sense. There is a severe lack of business knowledge. There are not clear and measurable metrics. What is the margin? What is the quarterly conversion goal? How are we tracking to plan? When does our fiscal year end? These are all questions that had differing answers or no answer. In fact, on more than one occasion, I was called negative for asking. An attempt has been made to solicit positive reviews (which can be read below) from current employees. A misguided effort that would be better channeled into identifying and addressing the issues leading to the current 25% turnover rate in staff (8 people in 12 weeks).

Not What They Tell you

Pros

Nice people? Allegedly there is unlimited time off, very few actually get that benefit.

Cons

Do not work here. They upper management (particularly the founders) do not care for you. They will hook you with the promise of working for a higher purpose but they do not follow that ethos. You will not be paid a living wage, you will constantly feel undermined and disrespected for your hard work. Saalt does not conduct itself with the "B-Corp values" in mind but they will tell everyone they do. Everyone is working 60+ hours a week for below living wage......in Idaho. You will not receive a raise but you will get to go to a company picnic occasionally. Saalt did not take covid seriously and forced workers back into the office in June 2020, never enforced masks and the founders actively encouraged people to not get vaccinated. Overall, this is a job that will run you ragged, demand your time and energy 24/7 without any benefits, pay or respect. Watch out.

Pros

They hire great hardworking people. The products are good quality, and they do care about sustainability.

Cons

Although Saalt hires talented people, the leaders ultimately don’t trust them to do their jobs without being involved in every single thing. Like everything. Only certain departments/people have the autonomy to really do their jobs well. Pay is below average and not market rate (unless you’re recruited then suddenly the money is there), but expectations are through the roof. Overworking is the norm—it’s expected for you to be available for last minute requests, even during holidays. The minute you set boundaries, your position and dedication is questioned. The negative reviews are real and lived experiences not to be taken lightly. They are all people who have worked really hard for the company, just to be let down. There is a huge lack of accountability from the owners for the amount of micromanagement there is—which adds a level of hypocrisy with how much they preach that everyone needs to take full ownership of their roles. When the going gets tough, they look for someone to scapegoat and blame for their decisions rather than looking at how their own actions got them there.
