Information Services culture is deteriorating and becoming a hostile work environment
Pros
Benefits, and pay. Work can be satisfying when it has meaning.
Cons
- Strategy: Working in IS, it is not about the patient first. It's about the money. If the department is not saving money, everyone is out for themselves and management bullies their employees to try and "save money". They pass off bad ideas as "Lean" work, but it ends up costing the hospital hundreds of thousands of dollars in the long run. Money is put before ethics. - Accountability: I've submitted complaints to HR. My coworkers have submitted complaints to HR. They do nothing. They turn a blind eye to operations (which is the heart and soul of the hospital) because clinical does so well. Management does not listen, and does not reprimand people who have committed serious violations in the organization (such as sexual harassment and violent behavior). Managers and employees yell at each other, and the workplace is hostile. Employees leave meetings crying, angry or depressed on a daily basis. - Favoritism: People only get hired or moved up in the chain if you're someone higher's friend. Don't have a manager who is your best friend? You're S.O.L. Qualifications or record of work does not matter. - Time management: Managers and analysts spend too much time in meetings, because strategy is usually too weak to execute work. We document in too many different places for our work, and management cannot accurately report out what we are doing. Very micromanaged with no result. - General work environment: people feel attacked, afraid and stuck. People are too afraid to speak out. There are some really great workers in the organization, but the bad ones repress quality work from being done. Employee health is deteriorating because of the high stress.
