Apparently I have to write 20 words here. I would have preferred to say nothing. At least I decided to not go to law school.

Cons

At 4:50 each night it was expected to basically do rounds to ask for permission from all the lawyers to be able to leave the office. On Christmas Eve a very senior lawyer in the department dropped in on all support staff just to make sure we were still working. Dubious overtime policy.

There's a lot of interesting work and this place gives you the opportunity to learn new things. Most of the attorneys are very pleasant to work with.

Cons

No consistency in office policies. Office policies and procedures change on the whim of management, and there's no recourse without retaliatory behavior. The environment is really toxic and the morale is very low among staff members, and attorneys are aware, but do nothing about it. Several really great secretaries have left, and will keep leaving.

Micromanagement from hell. No matter if your attorneys give approval, HR never will. Office policies are old school and they seem to have a “one policy should fit for all” ideal instead of allowing for individuals. Staff are clearly peasants in the hierarchy.
