      Some great people but no clear strategy

      Pros

      There are some amazing and talented people across the business and career progression is possible for those that are willing to graft for it.

      Cons

      Used to be a great place to work but now a business that continues to over promise and under deliver. I agree with a previous review that the emphasis has been on growth rather than execution. However, the approach to achieving this growth often lacks clarity, with the company frequently repeating the same mistakes without learning from them. This approach creates a heavy reliance on key personnel, leading to a high-pressure, long-hours environment for essential staff which has resulted in a large number of people leaving the business burnt out. In my view, this is largely due to a lack of domain or technical expertise among a few senior decision-makers and other parts of the business who's word is final, resulting in uninformed decisions that have affected the company's ability to follow through on its plans leaving it constantly putting pressure on teams to play catch up. The company's trajectory is not sustainable and needs a complete reshape of strategy, structure and leadership.

      Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences of working at Seccl, it’s great to see you shout out our amazing and talented people. Our purpose is to build technology that helps more people to invest – and invest well. Sounds simple enough, but in reality, there’s a lot of work to do and a LOT of lessons to learn along the way. We agree with you that we must get the balance right between growth and product delivery to succeed, and we’re working on that. We are pleased that our new CTO, Tom Harris joined us last month to help align our engineering roadmaps with the product roadmap, growth plans and our overall business strategy to move forward together. We don’t deny that Seccl is a hard fast-paced working environment – but would like to encourage anyone who feels that they can’t cope with their workload to speak to their people leader or leadership team, so we can try to resolve it. We also have free wellbeing resources via ‘the Shed’ if they need any outside support. We encourage everyone to feedback and ask questions at our monthly All company calls, speak to your people leader, a member of the exec team or alternatively to speak in confidence with the people team. This is to ensure that we can make positive changes based on your experience.       Pros

      Seccl’s proposition and timing to make a difference to financial services is exciting and will, in my opinion, be successful in growing to be a big player in the industry. Also the people are great and care about each other. Work/life balance is really good although felt like people wanted to work harder but weren’t in a position to highly perform.

      Cons

      Disappointingly, Seccl has developed various layers of hierarchy and a top table who make decisions in isolation which filter slowly down to the team on the ground. This is surprising for a company of just over 100 people and takes autonomy away from what could be high performing teams. Additionally, most of the top table are people the new CEO has brought across with him and so feels like the new Edinburgh office is a old-timers clique, leaving the Bath office feeling a little soulless. Seccl could be a much better place to work but the honest answer is, there are a lot of incredibly bright and talented people who can’t do their best work due to constraints around culture and how the business is structured.

      Not a place for quiet achievers…

      Pros

      A really centrally located office in Bath (albeit rundown). They do also provide some really great technology to get you started (MacBook, AirPods etc). There are still some really lovely people left too and I hope they keep them in the team!

      Cons

      I unfortunately didn’t have the best experience during my time in Seccl’s customer team. It started well and there are some extremely lovely people in the team but it is a hard environment to thrive in if you aren’t comfortable being the loudest voice in the room. It was made clear to me that I didn’t fit the clear mould they are trying to create and I do feel as though that is why I was ultimately asked to leave.

      Thanks for taking the time to share your experiences of Seccl. Whilst we believe wholeheartedly in transparency there are sometimes circumstances where that's not possible e.g. where some people may have left a company due to under performance for example. It's important to recognise that it does protect the individual though at times this can seem generic in terms of communication. As we evolve from start up to scale up some of our people processes are still catching up and these are documented on our people roadmap shaped by our people. The Bath office has just had a refurb and we have more plans to evolve the space once the team have had the chance to share what matters to them. We do have high expectations for performance here - it's a fast paced environment and absolutely not for everyone but we recognise in order to deliver for our customers we need to have the right proposition for our people.
