A Toxic Work Environment with Poor Management

Pros

- Remote-first environment - Able to hire internationally (albeit on a contractor contract with no protections) - Decent work-life balance

Cons

Unfortunately, SimpleTexting exemplifies numerous negative aspects that cannot be overlooked. In the interest of providing an objective review, it is essential to highlight the following glaring issues: Toxic Positivity and Top-Down Approach: SimpleTexting fosters a culture of toxic positivity, where management consistently portrays an overly optimistic outlook while dismissing any dissenting opinions. The implementation of new processes or rules is enforced without considering valuable input from employees, creating an environment that discourages collaboration and innovation. Disparity between US-based and Contract Staff: there is a stark contrast in the treatment of US-based staff and contract staff, with the latter being treated as second-class citizens. Contract staff are deprived of basic protections and rights, creating a palpable sense of inequity within the company. For instance, contract staff are always put under pressure to not take PTO, even though there are no official guidelines on how many days can be taken, and PTO is the only benefit that contract staff actually have. Lack of Transparency: communication and clarity are sorely lacking within SimpleTexting. Employees are often blindsided by terminations without any prior notice or explanation. Instances of employees disappearing from communication channels like Slack only to discover later that they were fired are not uncommon. Moreover, during a recent wave of layoffs by the parent company Sinch, SimpleTexting failed to provide any communication or clarification, leaving employees uninformed and uncertain. Incompetent Management and Shifting Targets: The management at SimpleTexting demonstrates a profound lack of understanding when it comes to setting quarterly targets and measuring performance. The targets themselves are constantly shifting, causing confusion and uncertainty among employees. This lack of clear parameters for measuring individual and team performance further contributes to the overall disarray within the organization. Low Morale and Toxic Culture: Team morale, particularly within the Customer Support and Customer Success teams, is consistently low. Numerous employees express their desire to leave at the earliest opportunity due to the toxic work culture prevalent at SimpleTexting. This toxic atmosphere not only hampers productivity but also diminishes employee satisfaction and engagement. Incompetent Team Leads and Arbitrary Performance Reviews: The team leads at SimpleTexting display a staggering level of incompetence in managing their teams. Performance reviews are often arbitrary, with employees receiving negative evaluations based on isolated incidents beyond their control. Furthermore, team leads fail to monitor overall team performance effectively, resulting in some members slacking off, with the leads exerting undue pressure on high-performing team members to pick up the slack instead. Exploitation of Cheap Labor: SimpleTexting's business model heavily relies on exploiting cheap labor in developing countries such as the Philippines, Latin America, and African nations. Long-term employees from these regions frequently experience stagnant wages, even when they exhibit exemplary performance. With each new hiring cycle, the average wage further decreases, demonstrating the company's disregard for providing a fair and livable wage to its employees. Disregard for Customers and Change Management: SimpleTexting demonstrates a complete lack of consideration for its customers. When an employee is terminated, there is no notice period to facilitate a smooth transition of customers to other team members. This lack of communication regarding employee departures is indicative of the company's disregard for managing team morale and customer expectations. Blame Culture and Poor Leadership: Management at SimpleTexting consistently throws teams under the bus to deflect blame for perceived poor performance. Despite sky-high employee turnover in the Customer Support and Customer Success teams over the years, management has never been made accountable for their questionable hiring practices and onboarding processes. My advice: stay well clear of this company and their horrific work culture.

Pros

- Remote work from home -Good Work life balance with generous PTO

Cons

- Toxic management style. You are belittled in chat rooms and ranked against your peers. It doesn't foster a working team environment, but rather a save your own butt approach. - Pay is low. Like ridiculously low for what is expected. And they aren't honest about the job in the interview so you know what to expect for that pay. - Micromanaging. Everything you do is monitored and picked apart each day with how you could have done things better. And not in a positive way. - The don't hire/keep enough staff to properly handle accounts. Response times to customers is slow do to understaffing and then the managers complain that customers are being reached out to.

Pros

- Hands-off leadership team that's driven by results - Plenty of learning opportunities - Supportive environment that's free of big egos - Lots of transparency from partners - Growing user base but the team is still nimble and can launch new initiatives quickly - Work-life balance. My managers take an interest in my life and want to make sure I’m happy in my role. - The yearly meetups are fun

Cons

- Typical growing pains of a scaling company - If you’re a self-starter who can set your own goals (that are aligned with the company's) and then work to meet them with minimal supervision, you’ll thrive here. However, if you prefer very structured environments where you're assigned a set of tasks, this may not be the place for you. - Working remotely isn’t for everyone. It does require discipline.
