Slimy Toxic Waste of Time

Pros

Opportunity to network with private sector and unique small business owners, as well as government related employees. Passion for small business success unites the front line staff for mission style dedication and work ethic.

Cons

Small Business BC has become a very toxic work environment. Upper management has no interest in using employee feedback despite efforts to solicit it. The same concerns have been addressed over and over by countless staff members who are told to to swallow the wrath of poor management decisions or else. The "or else" part results in a revolving door of new applicants much more educated and qualified than the management staff itself. Management is incapable of standing up to either the CEO or BD, leaving staff to continuously deal with the same problem over and over instead of facing it with proper business management tactics. Management uses bullying, fear tactics, and micro management of menial tasks to keep staff from raising concerns. Being funded by both the federal government and the provincial government should raise some red flags to the general public. While we firmly believe in our ability to deliver an excellent and necessary public service for small business up-starts, the sunk money on over valued management wages, private high end lunches, 5 star hotel stays is alarming. Management wages are far above market value, while the rest of the staff is drastically underpaid considering experience and qualifications. A severe lack of education and marketable skills in the management team. There has been many things to raise concern over the years and perhaps one should not be surprised by the heavy slide into darkness here. Praise only goes to a single member of management who inexplicably has little or nothing to do with the success of the proposed win. Promotions have occurred out of the blue despite a lack of industry/ position knowledge, titles artificially altered to "VP", extracurricular tasks and networking taken away from staff responsibilities, communications very restrictive and selective. This organization employs bullying and a general attitude that they don't care as a management style. There continues to be a mass exodus from this organization. Avoid at all costs.

Pros

Personal reward for helping clients with their small business start up concerns and requirements, adding to your skill set by learning small business regulations, related in formation, market research and business planning, etc. Networking is part of the package - not just at events, but with the many external partners and organizations that are dealt with on a daily basis. For all new staff, my advice is to take the good out of your time there and make it your own. Learn what you can, make some great connections and grow your skill set. Keep your options open, there are some good opportunities that might come up with partners and other external relationships.

Cons

Although management talks about internal training and ability for staff to take seminars to add to and improve their core knowledge, time and chronic staff shortages rarely allow for any participation. This proves frustrating for interested business advisors. It not only hampers personal and professional on-the-job growth and improvement, but also causes knowledge gaps of products and services which are advised and provided to clients. At the moment, leadership is grim and silos abound. Mutual respect does not exist. Over the past half a dozen years, the atmosphere has been tense and toxic, causing a mass exodus of talent and management refuses to address these issues, no matter how tactfully they are put across and brought up for discussion. Although it is a "union shop", Collective Agreement provisions are often put to the test between members and management - often times, management has bluntly disregarded certain matters of union protocol with regard to termination of staff. Again, nothing has put an end to rampant internal bullying. What a shame, considering the fantastic people who work there who keep the ship running with amazing customer service and concern for the Small Business BC brand.

Pros

- Coworkers are nice for the most part - Good location

Cons

- Don't be fooled by the 'Title Inflation', all positions are severely below industry average for the role - Depending on the department, really political and manipulative management - Unequal treatment by management. - No opportunity for upward mobility - Dated, non flexible work environment. Runs like government 10 years ago - Compounded workload when people quit (due to low salaries those who work there only opt to for under a year and then move on)
