Pros

The team at Solar Sister is so passionate about the work that they do, and I was honored to be a part of it. It's a small but mighty organization with very impressive leaders and staff in Africa and the US. The leadership team has a clear vision of where they want Solar Sister to grow, and they work hard to make it happen. The US-based employees work remotely and have lots of flexibility to make their own schedules - and get lots of PTO time! While each team member has autonomy and ownership over their own area of expertise, everyone works collaboratively and supports each other. Pros: - Meaningful mission and vision - Passionate staff - Growing organization making incredible impact - Autonomous work and leadership opportunities - Flexible work schedule - 20 PTO days and 2-week end of year closure

Cons

Remote work is not for everyone - once travel is possible again, the leadership team meets twice a year. The work is collaborative but is individually-driven. This was ideal for me as I wanted to be in a leadership role and design my role as I saw fit to support and help grow Solar Sister, so a go-getter attitude is a must!

Pros

Nothing much to pride about them.

Cons

A very deceptive company that was shut down in Uganda. Has perfected the act of falsifying story telling enabling them to win lots of donor trust.

Pros

There are many amazing things about this organization - passionate and tireless people; majority women staff across all offices - a rare thing; some Africans in positions of power; some good ideas and intentions with regard to supporting women in Africa to set up small businesses.

Cons

Sadly despite the really wonderful aspects and goals of the org, I cannot recommend this as a healthy work place. I’ve worked across several African countries in various roles for international NGOs, as a consultant for UN offices and as a journalist. I’m a flexible, experienced and capable person. However, I did not feel supported by my supervisor and I certainly experienced being blamed and sacrificed to protect my supervisor’s image. I also observed behaviour that did not uplift young women and women of colour, and senior management that was unable to share power and decision making.
