Working for Startuptree was the most formative and important experience I've had in the past three years, not only teaching me a tremendous amount about software engineering but also about entrepreneurship and what it means to seriously run a company. I was provided opportunities make decisions on features that would directly affect the customer, and as I built up skills I was given responsibility for leading a small engineering team. I was granted ownership of many projects, and had a say in a variety of things ranging from the UI redesign to the architecture and frameworks we used on the engineering side. For someone who likes to wear many hats, this is the perfect place to be.
While the experience I got as a software engineer at StartupTree was great, what really made my time there shine were the relationships I formed with the CEO and other senior members of the team. Even from my first day I was encouraged to share my honest thoughts for features, and never once did I feel like there was any hierarchy preventing a new employee like myself from contributing. Peter always made time to answer questions I had about entrepreneurship, and he taught me more about what it takes to run a startup than anything I learned while in school. I consider him the best mentor I’ve had and still have in that regard.
I eventually left Startuptree to found my own company, and I do not think I could have done that without the skills and lifelong mentorship I was awarding for being part of such a phenomenal company. I started my career at StartupTree and owe a lot of where I am today to the people and product that it represents.
Cons
As life is in any startup, work moves quickly and you must be ready to handle the responsibility. I witnessed a few team members crack under this type of pressure, but if you enjoy a fast paced environment, this is a tremendous place to grow.
