Toxic environment and wasting a golden opportunity

Pros

CEO is very transparent Unique market opportunity

Cons

Heads of discipline are often dismissive and rude. Collaboration is encouraged by studio leadership, but in reality, there are restrictions around who can ask certain questions, what type of questions can be asked, as well as who is privy to documentation. Processes for decision-making are overly complex, with a high level of dependency on senior leadership. As a result, even straightforward decisions take considerable time, and constant follow-ups are required. There is inconsistency in accountability across the studio, with some individuals held to different standards than others. Issues raised are explained away and outcomes of management feedback surveys seem to be non-existent, Recent policy changes have reduced flexibility. For example, employees who are unwell but able to work from home are required to take sick leave, which can contribute to people attending the office while unwell, ultimately impacting productivity negatively. There is more emphasis on process than delivery. Employees who attempt to support teams outside their immediate one are discouraged from doing so and told to remain within their defined roles. Some hires from larger studios have introduced practices that do not align well with what the studio needs. Career progression can feel like it’s based on subjectivity and manager preference rather than ability. Diversity and inclusion at the senior levels of the studio have declined recently.

Pros

Opportunity to work on Undisputed, a highly anticipated boxing title. Exposure to technical challenges in matchmaking, replication, and live operations. Small studio size allowed for quick decision-making at times. (in the past)

Cons

Lack of accountability for some inhuman behaviour from upper management. Promises that fall flat in the short term — leadership does not uphold the values the company claims to stand for. High turnover due to lack of professionalism and minimal long-term vision from upper management, who often behaved more like a teenager with a new Porsche than responsible leaders. Communication was inconsistent, creating uncertainty and confusion. Minimal career progression or professional development opportunities. Advice to Future Employees: Only commit here if your values as a professional and as a person don’t bother you step over the others. If you don’t care, you’ll be fine.

We recognise that not every individual experience may be positive. However, we do not recognise the characterisation of our studio as described here. Several of the assertions made are inconsistent with the standards, behaviours, and accountability we actively uphold. Steel City Interactive operates in an ambitious industry. Delivering complex titles requires clarity of expectation, professional conduct, and shared accountability. We ask our people to invest their expertise, creativity, and commitment into the studio’s success - and we are equally committed to investing in their growth, development, and long-term careers. Respectful behaviour is non-negotiable at every level, and if concerns are raised through appropriate channels, they will be reviewed seriously and thoroughly. It is also important to state clearly that natural attrition within the studio remains extremely low. The overwhelming majority of our team continue to build their careers here, which we believe reflects the strength, stability, and mutual trust within the culture we are developing. An ambitious and ownership-led environment will not suit everyone. That does not equate to toxicity; it reflects the reality of collaborative work where accountability and contribution are shared. We remain committed to continuous improvement in leadership capability, communication clarity, and professional development. We are proud of the work our teams are delivering and of the many dedicated professionals who contribute to the studio every day.
