Setting a High Bar and Exceeding Expectations

Pros

Structural's mission is to empower employers to unleash the full potential of their people and teams. As such, they have to "walk the walk" and create a work environment where employees can reach their potential, which is always a high bar to achieve. Work is demanding but flexible, and the team has so far been carefully selected to build a performance-driven culture. Because of the support we receive from High Alpha, we have the opportunity to be a scrappy, fast moving startup without many of the financial and wellness drawbacks that come with working for a company not yet fully established in the market. We also get to be part of a community of a portfolio of companies, and can leverage the knowledge and expertise of our colleagues across multiple companies, allowing us to collaborate and get feedback from some of the brightest people in tech. The Structural product is very promising, and solves some real business challenges. While we're not quite in the "critical for business operations" category yet, I can imagine us getting there very soon with our forward-thinking engineering team. Leadership is open to suggestions and transparent in their decisions. They encourage us to bring our ideas, experience, and skills to work everyday, even if those things don't always fit into our exact job role. I can honestly say that I enjoy coming to work every day, which isn't something I can say about many of my jobs. I am always learning and I'm forced to think about problems in new ways. I feel challenged and supported by management and co-workers.

Cons

While financial backing is not an issue, we don't have the budget and tools more established companies might have, and are forced to be very thoughtful about how we spend money. We have to do more with less, which is typical for a startup but may not work for everyone.

Strong mission and a long journey ahead

Pros

Strong Mission: What Structural is trying to do is really powerful and can make a meaningful impact in the industry. If this speaks to you then you can find your fit within the team. Work atmosphere: You can work your own hours and deliver your best results. The team values results and passionate work more than it cares about hours and job titles. Growing team: You can maximize your impact and deliver great results since the team is relatively small in size. There is an opportunity to show your work off to the team and be proud of it. Everyone celebrates each others successes. Tools at your disposal: You have the opportunity to use the best tools, software and methods to get your best work done.

Cons

Career progression: "Climbing the ladder" may not be an option since its a startup and the hierarchy is pretty flat. Distributed team across a few cities and recommended work from home twice a week can make it harder to interface with colleagues and make friends.

Pros

CEO Scott Burns has helped build a culture that is relaxed but hard-working, transparent and filled with integrity. The direction of the company is always communicated clearly and I very much feel like my voice is heard (and acted upon) when I bring up important issues. Experimentation and diversity of thought are encouraged and celebrated. We work hard but I'm also able to leave my work at work for the most part. Everybody on the team is talented and dedicated to their craft. And while folks are usually working independently, my experience collaborating with others has been very positive. Most importantly, Scott is an innovative and inspirational leader who practices what he preaches. He's also pretty damn funny (in a uniquely Scott way). Benefit Snapshot: Flexible Time off Work from home 2x a week Competitive pay Self-driven opportunities for professional development Exciting product and growing company

Cons

I love that our work schedules are flexible and we're able to work from home 2x a week, however, there is a trade-off to this flexibility. It's hard to organize outings after work and bond with colleagues outside of the professional environment. That being said, it can be done, you just have to put in a little more planning and effort.
