Pros

Fantastic, passionate, hard working people on the ground. Wanting to do good and raise funds to support the care sector of the charity which from what it seems is doing a brilliant job caring and supporting our patients and loved ones. Also very rewarding when you help volunteers to find paid work.

Cons

Although running a business with targets for everything through voluntary help is incredibly difficult. Senior management completely out of touch with the daily grind that occurs within the shops or they just don't care. There is a class system here, whereby shop workers are treated like ruffians and distrusted to do their jobs. Your opinions are not respected and constantly spoken down to and sometimes in a rough, abrupt manner. Shop management training is completely lacking or insufficient, a culture of sink or swim. Poor communication between departments. No HR support unless you are of a senior position. Shop conditions are dire in some locations, whereby working in damp conditions is the norm, as trying to chase repairs can take years! Yes years! Just a general lack of support and respect all round really. Unrealistic fundraising targets set for shop teams when we already employ fundraisers. No support to hit your targets, they'd rather just push you out the door, I've seen it happen so many times to good managers. It's such a shame to have a majority of cons, and this is just a summary.

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback on your role at Sue Ryder. Please be assured that we take all comments about working here extremely seriously, and want to ensure that we offer an environment where people feel happy and supported to help raise money towards the care we provide. We are extremely grateful to all our shop staff, and are aware that many do go above and beyond to help us reach our aims. We must listen to everyone to ensure a happy and safe working environment and are working to improve communications across the charity as a whole. If you feel comfortable in doing so, you can get in touch with someone at Sue Ryder to share your specific issues so we can work on improving the areas you have discussed. We welcome this feedback and will not be able to improve what we do without it. Thank you.

HR are corrupt

Pros

Care centres that are providing end of life care, nurses are doing an amazing job.

Cons

More disadvantages than positives on this organisation, mostly aimed at the people working in the London and Sudbury offices. (Behind the scenes) The charity's management is toxic and likes paying staff off to keep them quiet and ask them to leave quietly. This charity spends more money on out of court settlements because HR and management continually breach their own policies. Fundraising staff members are also very corrupt and untrustworthy. They'll do anything to keep the fundraising director happy. I have never seen so many people in this department that are sheep, especially the ones based in the north of the UK. Also directors and head of departments salaries are over-flated. Especially one director gave a head of department a salary increase that was more than a directors salary and this became gossip with in the organisation.

Thank you for your comments. We strongly encourage you to speak with your Area Manager during your weekly meeting to raise any concerns relating to your shop. The office move in London is to downsize to a much smaller and more cost effective space which will save us a significant amount of money each year. In relation to company cars it is written policy that they are only offered to people that exceed considerable mileage whilst undertaking Sue Ryder business. For more information please see the company car policy. I hope this has answered your concerns.
