Pros

The projects are interesting. Surface is typically chosen when the client wants more creative design work. You get opportunities to work on your own designs and manage projects if you work hard.

Cons

Your definition of working hard and theirs is going to be different. Once you’ve worked there for a while it feels like you’ve sold your soul for less than optimal pay. There’s a reason why they have such a high turnover rate. Employees can take it for a couple years before they get burnt out and leave. Expect to have many late nights (some even to midnight or later) and still be working at 8 AM the next day. The flexibility to rest simply is not given, which is surprising for a company that claims to have a good work/life balance. Feedback on this from employees is typically not well received.

Pros

Leading/Well renowned firm in the region so you get exposed to a lot of really high profile and interesting jobs that have shaped the Triangle, design focused firm, openness to climb quickly if you break your back for the job, opportunity to be exposed to all phases of design including construction administration early on, nice historic building with great natural light and in the heart of downtown

Cons

Where to even start. This firm is so poorly managed. The principals are stretched thin from the sheer volume of projects they have and have no time to provide feedback, absolutely no work culture, no overtime so lots of unpaid hours, horrible benefits and very low pay for the area, deadline driven so can be pretty stressful at times, extremely high turnover, all about cost cutting so designers suffer, no formal training

Pros

Various interesting projects, skill development, exposure to various facets of design (schematic design, design development, construction documentation, construction administration). Some informal mentoring from leadership.

Cons

Expect regular unpaid overtime. Deadline driven work. High turnover makes for a stressful work environment for current employees. No formal trainings. Employees required to use their own equipment when working from home. Not great benefits.
