It's bad - really, really bad. Bullying, finger pointing and favouritism
Pros
- Some passionate colleagues who work hard and care about what they do - In theory, a great product which has loads of potential and great to work on
Cons
- Emotionally unstable CEO. This is a man who is constantly throwing tantrums, attacking people, sending extremely aggressive slack messages publicly and privately, throwing people under the bus. He has been known to make comments that it "annoys" him when he cannot provoke others to anger or cannot bait them into arguing with him. - Strained relationship between founders. Although it has not even been openly addressed, it is clear the founders have a very strained relationship and if you're on the "wrong" side (e.g. NOT the CEOs "side") then you are automatically fighting for the basic respect given to those on the "right" side. Leadership will actively work against you to ensure your time there is unpleasant and difficult. - Favouritism. You need to be a friend or favourite of the CEO to progress in your career. If he decides he takes a disliking to you (e.g. you push back against decisions or for whatever personal reason he decides he doesn't like you) then your career progression is completely and actively blocked. - Bigoted environment. I have personally witnessed colleagues using derogatory language towards other colleagues. There is written and recorded proof of this, HR is aware and this is has never been addressed. - Sexism. If you're a woman you're already on the back foot, unless you're a hire made directly by senior leadership or a favourite of the CEO. Again, this is recorded/written and presented to HR, but never addressed. - Blame culture. People are encouraged to throw others under the bus continuously and there is no accountability - it is like a contest of who who can do the least wrong and who they can push the most blame on to for anything and everything. - Fear culture. People are so afraid to speak out when they see something unethical or bad happening, or push back on senior leadership because they know it will ruin their career and progression due to the spiteful nature of senior management. - Lack of product knowledge. No one seems to be expected to learn how the product works outside a few select people, for example there is one director who had not even logged into the product. This creates stress on certain teams and further pushes the blame culture. - No structure, no workflows and no opportunity to create them - people are worked to within an inch of their life for anything and everything outside of their job role (in extremes for even a start up) but not allowed to actually do things to relieve strain. Of course then they catch blame for this. - Zero benefits. Every all hands we hear about how the company is making millions and doing excellently, however there are no benefits outside of what is legally required. No learning and development, work from home stipend, bonuses etc.
