Pros

You get a housing and flight stipend. Kids are normally great. Working at a school is more consistent than a cram school.

Cons

agents often have little to no experience. If you get a good agent your experience will be great. Otherwise, it might not be. Lots of bureaucracy. The salary is lower than a private school.

Pros

Pay is fair for the amount of work you do. There's a step program that pays you more each year (though it doesn't even really keep up with inflation... same as the US). Supposedly teachers with verifiable previous experience teaching in public schools (only PUBLIC schools) will be eligible for additional pay... but only if that experience comes *after* receiving your home country's teaching license. In my two years here, I've had 8 recruiters now and all but one (my current one) have been friendly and have tried their best to communicate proactively (proactive communication is a rare thing in Taiwan).

Cons

I'm writing this review because too many of the reviews criticize Teach Taiwan for what are essentially problems with the school districts themselves. Taiwan has a very old-school, top-down management style. Those that work at Teach Taiwan have virtually zero influence over how completely disorganized and unprofessional and unprepared for foreign teachers the school district may be. Nearly all of the criticisms that could be given to Teach Taiwan are actually criticisms of Taiwan's Ministry of Education and their abysmal implementation of this Bilingual 2030 program. Another MAJOR con of this job (which, again, Teach Taiwan has no control over) is the fact that we work 12-month contracts, despite having no summer classes. This means hours and hours and hours of desk warming for no purpose at all.

Pros

Low pressure, decent pay considering the cost of living. Good for getting classroom experience. Great work-life balance.

Cons

Experience varies a lot by school. Schools don't necessarily know how to implement co-teaching or use a foreign teacher effectively. Sometimes have to deal with different culture/ways of teaching.
