Pros

Pay is higher than average for most Counseling jobs in substance abuse field

Cons

Health Insurance is not in network anywhere deductible is astronomically high. PTO is bad, you earn less than one day a month AND that time covers everything (no separate sick, PTO, or vacation time). Company is all about the money and how you’re gonna bring it in. Clients are kept longer than need be, lied to about insurance covering services (they like to make their money from being out of network and not saying this). Closing for inclement weather is unheard of. If your notes are not in within 24 hours, you may be written up. Turnover is high and recruiters like to hype up potential employees.

Toxic Workplace

Pros

The offices are new and spacious. The counselors truly care about the clients and put in their best effort.

Cons

I left the Counseling Center due to toxic work environment. The supervisors do a poor job of providing support to counselors, those that speak up are ignored or reprimanded. There is a lack of oversight by corporate. There has been a lot of counselor turnover, the worst part about that is the affect this must have on the clients, some of whom had to change counselors 2 or 3 times. The clients are not the first priority here –making money is – so the management will often turn to acts that are ethically questionable to keep their business running. For example, they will keep clients way beyond their need for treatment because they are making money off them. Furthermore, there appears to be a lack of professionalism, as supervisors have been observed gossiping with clients, forging paperwork, and scheduling sessions they do not show up to. Paid time off is slim and there are no sick days. I did enjoy working in this field, however I do not recommend working here.

Pros

The counseling who do individual and group therapy genuinely care

Cons

Unfortunately for this job there are way more cons than there should be. The company operates from a business model and not client focused. In other words it is the "retail world" of counseling. All the cooperate offices and supervisors care about is the money clients bring in and not about the clients needs. Clients are charged for groups they did not attend and you are told to "make up a note" so the company makes money from the insurance company. Clients are kept in treatment longer than they should be as they bring money to the clinic. If the client has a legal issue, forget about it because the client will be there as long as possible or threatened with being given a bad report to whatever legal representative they have. As counselors you are overworked and underpaid, constantly being reminded that you are not doing your job or you are not hitting the monthly quota that the company has set for the clinic. Expect to be bullied and harassed by those in charge so much so that legal action was required for myself. No matter how much you try to get help and advice from cooperate, nothing is ever done. You are required to clock in and out every day but the supervisor changes it and you get docked pay despite you being there. You can advocate and fight for yourself but doing so will only get you doing more work as punishment. Supervisors really do no work and many times ethics and values appear to be compromised as they make clients do things such as get their morning coffee. If you are looking to work here run away fast
