Pros

I worked for this organization from 2015-2016 as a Corps member and endured workplace harassment daily at my service site. I was discriminated against, ridiculed, yelled at, called names, prevented from completing intervention work with the children at my service site and much more. This abuse went on for the duration of my service year. I went up the Literacy Lab chain of command fairly early (as they have built in many supports). However, not a single Literacy Lab supervisor, coach, mentor, trainer, etc disrupted this workplace abuse in any meaningful way. Instead, they insisted that I bend, twist and contort myself to accommodate the abuser (teaching assistant) at my site. They fail to protect, support and validate their Corps members.

Cons

You won't get paid for your first month of service (August) and no one will let you know ahead of time. You will learn this on your first day of orientation (in August) and yes you will already be deeply financially invested in this program and financially unprepared for this lack of a paycheck. There was a huge and fairly unnecessary chain of command what I went through when I was abused and harassed at my service site.

Pros

Once a great company to work for when the founding CEOs built a culture of trust and passion, working closely alongside staff, tutors, and students.

Cons

Public tax filings reveal a concerning shift that came with the new organizational leadership. Despite receiving a multi-million-dollar grant from the MacKenzie Scott Foundation, the funds were inadequately managed by the new executive team, leading to a 2023 audit that identified a "significant deficiency in internal controls", an issue that continues to persist as seen in the 7 million dollar deficit in the 2024 tax filing.

The Literacy Lab Response

The Literacy Lab’s former leadership created an amazing organization, and it is an honor to continue that legacy. The current leadership has seen clean audits every year of their tenure and secured millions of dollars in government and other highly monitored funding sources, along with a $10 million gift from MacKenzie Scott. For 5 consecutive years, we've earned the Best of Washington Award in the Nonprofit category. We have a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator and a Platinum rating from Candid. Our leadership and board have worked to ensure we maintain operating reserves well above the 3-6 month recommended range for non-profits. Our Board Treasurer, a finance executive, has 18 years of experience and reviews our finances on an ongoing basis. Because of this diligence, we have been able to strategically leverage reserves while maintaining an above-average balance. Under the current leadership, the organization has never operated at a deficit. If you have any questions about The Literacy Lab, please reach out to our leadership.

Pros

Working with the kids and helping them succeed and enhance their literacy skills is a great achievement.

Cons

Most staff do not work with you when the kids have behavioral problems that disrupts the other students. Some of the staff demeans you in front of other staff members and children and The Literacy Lab just expects you to take the abuse. The L.L. always takes the side of their contracts because their tutors are expendable.
