Disillusioned Execs Ruin It

Pros

Great junior staff, good benefits

Cons

The execs who have all been there for longer than their talent and capability deserves will ruin your entire experience. They think they are holding up the company when in reality they are perpetuating racism, heteronormativity, classism, and ableism. I wish that was a complete list… the junior staff you work with will astound you but that won’t last considering the terrible turnover rate. They will use their non-profit status to use and abuse you, but don’t let that fool you. They are all getting a comparable wage. Search “storyville center for the spoken word” for their 2020 IRS tax records and see for yourself. They overworked BIPOQ, queer, and disabled staff members while making them take a pay cut but they all still earned over 200k. They are the epitome of toxic friend work culture

Pros

- friendly and supportive junior staff - decent benefits - lively events

Cons

- no transparency in how to grow within company - believes itself to be a staple in empathy but shows little to none of it to its staff; rarely considered how covid and systems of oppression affected employees - good luck if you're not smiling 24/7, not smiling will be interpreted as being ungrateful to be there or disengaged from the work - upper management cannot handle feedback, even though they would greatly benefit from it - some managers micromanage and show they do not trust their staff - management will set arbitrary goals and timelines then get mad at staff for not accomplishing them - reactive instead of proactive when it comes to DEI efforts - will continuously add responsibilities outside of your job description without salary increase or title change - feedback from management is rarely helpful, instead it's vague, petty and comes weeks after a project is completed

Get what you need and get out

Pros

- You get to meet and work with some amazing people (the storytellers, hosts, community, etc. are 10/10) - Depending on your role, you get the chance to travel which is a cool opportunity - Steller jr. staff - The events are fun to attend, especially if you're into The Moth programming

Cons

- No clear guidelines for upward mobility in the organization - A lot of white leadership and BIPOC jr. staff with no clear direction for diverse change - Their mission does not align with the actions within the organization: not making many changes to find new audiences, being intentional with casting, minimal BIPOC artistic staff and managers, etc. - Microaggressions from artistic team who are unaware, and if they're told then they don't change -Power hoarding from execs and it's blatant in the Zoom meetings and creative calls... yikes... -Low pay that's below industry standard for many positions - Subpar work/life balance
