Terrible experience

Pros

There are flexible job hours.

Cons

You work out of a young girls apartment who’s parents pay the rent. It is a very unprofessional environment and the “founder/CEO” has no idea what she’s doing or how to manage people. Everyone who has worked there has made all the connections and done the work while she has claimed credit. Each employee has not lasted more than a year (there has never been more than 3 employees at a time) and quit because they can’t take the manipulation and texts/calls to retrieve her toilet paper and groceries at all hours. The pay is low, the benefits are nonexistent, and the environment is unprofessional and catty because of her behavior. The job doesn’t qualify you to move forward in your career so it ultimately becomes a waste of time. The “founder” has had no prior work experience so it’s hard to take constant direction from someone who has no qualifications to direct or manage a team.

Don't Do It

Pros

Startup culture and you may attend PR events

Cons

You are working out of a 23 year old's apartment. While I was there, she paid the absolute minimum salary that is unlivable in NYC unless your parents are still helping you out and can help you pay for rent or groceries. There are no benefits or stock options. This is the founder/boss' first and only job, so her management skills are non-existent. She doesn't know how to manage a company, let alone connect with her employees, build a solid team, or is able to address conflict in a professional, constructive manner. Expect texts and calls asking you to hop on and work before and after your agreed-upon hours. I don't think that I've heard (or experienced) the company having three or four employees hired at one time before they quit or were fired. Famous freelancer, Lauren Duca, has also negatively tweeted about The Newsette in the past, calling the newsletter "privileged complicity," with thousands of her followers agreeing. If you want to have a future in media, and be taken seriously, I don't believe you should do it here.

Pros

Personal atmosphere as company is small, may get to attend cool events

Cons

The CEO Danny is a nightmare and the whole setup is very unprofessional. She really doesn’t know how to run a company and is currently in the ‘young and making lots of money’ phase so each day is filled with hearing about her new chef or a gift a celebrity gave her… all while she’s paying you the absolute minimum with basically nonexistent benefits. Just really do not recommend working here…
