Pros

Amazing front line staff and volunteers, some really meaningful work, and often great food. Union.

Cons

Like a lot of smaller charities, there are issues with management. There are some great managers, some don't seem to have the training or resources to manage well, but one is outright harmful and it has a profound impact on staff retention and moral across the organization (not to mention the delivery of services). There's a lot of defensive behaviour from leadership and a failure of accountability, which is why the union formed with nearly unanimous support.

Pros

Great mission, great frontline workers who care about the community.

Cons

Senior management protects themselves while disregarding concerns. The Board is useless and turns their heads to what is actually going on with their SLT. There is a reason why there are no 360 reviews and no HR.

Pros

The organization has a great mission, program and support staff are awesome, community members are great to work with, and as other have already said - food is amazing!

Cons

The major issues are with senior management and the board. With the lack of transparency in the organization, it’s hard to tell who holds the power in allowing bad management to continue. One example of poor management is staff being set up to fail - zero direction is given, no feedback, and then seemingly out of nowhere staff have been terminated. Management takes no accountability. Now that the staff have unionized, I hope this means there will be proper performance reviews and more support for staff to succeed in their roles. Even when staff do really well, there is no recognition. For example, staff have to organize their own staff appreciation party. Instead of recognition, senior management reports on and takes credit for staff work without fully understanding what is happening in programs.
