This company is a disaster

Pros

Seemingly good benefits and lots of initial hype

Cons

Lots of change in direction (I get it, its a start-up, but they are all over the place), tons of layoffs framed as "restructuring" after several all-hands asking about layoffs- they claim transparency and don't deliver. Middle upper management, (not C-suite) doesn't have a good sense of the product or what the company is really doing and acts like they are listening and then turn around and reprimand employees for speaking up, saying any sort of dissent or questioning is disrespectful. Expectations for each role are not clear and for many roles there is no clear path upward, you are just in limbo. The vibe feels secretive, sneaky and backhanded- someone says one thing to your face and another behind your back. There is an incredible amount of gossip and general bad culture from the top down. Additionally, they don't like any sort of questions regarding the independence (AICPA) aspect of their reporting and brush it off as not a concern when the auditors are very much a part of the company as a whole and not particularly independent IMO. There are a lot of other companies making a very similar product who seem a lot more above board.

Hot Mess

Pros

-Some really amazing people there. I have life long friends, professional and personal, from my time here - Health insurance is amazing

Cons

- One of the more covertly toxic workplaces out there. They try to seem like the culture is amazing and everyone is a family but the undercover politics and cliques that are formed are impossible to ever rise above - Management has NO idea what they are doing. Inexperienced leaders who refuse to learn or get better - feedback is not taken into consideration - Blind loyalty to the early employees of the company. Unsure if this is due to equity stakes (likely so) but it is holding back the company from growing. It breeds favoritism and an inability to ever get ahead if you are new to the company. - Lack of transparency from leaders - No upward mobility or real, tangible career path or trajectory across all departments - Culture of hiring and firing, year after year. The turnover rate is outrageous and newer employees will be laid off after outperforming legacy employees.

Thank you for the feedback and I am sorry that this was the experience you had. Like most startups, we are a growing company and trying to build a better place to work. Regarding fairness and leadership capability, we just recently introduced a structured performance discussion process and launched our first ever Leadership Development program for new managers. I hope that these steps will start to build the type of leadership capability that can prevent others from having the perceptions you were left with. Regarding transparency, we hold bi-weekly All Hands meetings where we share detailed business goals and results candidly and take anonymous questions from our employees live on the call. There are other reviews here on Glassdoor that clearly highlight our transparency as more than other startups and helpful in understanding the health of our business. Finally, culture: again, like many startups we work hard to make this a great place to work. We recently relaunched our Values to help our team align their efforts. We support many Employee Resource Groups who want to rally around their peers and include them in celebrating or commemorating their shared experiences and we run an annual engagement survey to gather feedback and find ways to address the issues that are surfaced. In sum, Thoropass is not a perfect place and we are facing many of the same struggles that other startups and tech companies are facing in the current economic environment. However, we are always serious about being open to feedback and continuously trying to improve the employee experience . Again, thank you for taking the time to write about your experience, while different from many other reviews here on Glassdoor, each employee perspective is important and we will take it into account while we continue to grow the business and scale the culture. Sincerely, Joe Bast VP, People & Operations

Lack of Accountability and Flawed Management

Pros

- Relatively transparent communication, especially for a startup, even if a lot of times it proves to be inaccurate or untrue, they at least tried - A lot of really great people work here - Made some life long friends - Great benefits and comp - Decent tech stack

Cons

- Strange promotion policy. For example, a senior leader who seemingly never hit a major goal, announced missing goals essentially every quarter was promoted three or four times in under a year. Another example, great employees get laid off and their managers who are not good at their jobs get promoted immediately after. - Irrational return to office policy. Apparently the founders decided to get an office, when relatively few of us wanted one. When they saw that very few people were using the office, they mandated that those of us in NYC had to come in. The office is loud, hot and terrible for communication and networking. It's particularly bad when we were hired as remote employees and suddenly have to come to an office. - Two very questionable C-suite hires who made some very questionable decisions that negatively impacted a very large amount of employees. - Consistent habit of saying one thing and then doing another. Example, proclaiming, "we don't foresee any layoffs" and then laying people off less than a month later. - Disingenuous and hollow approach to diversity.
