Pros

Pay isn't horrible, time off is decent, good health care, employees get along (aside from Sr. Management), location is easy to access.

Cons

Where to start? The management in almost all departments needs a serious overhaul. Most are micro-managers who have been at the credit union for 30+ years so good luck getting a promotion. The problem is that these managers don't do any work. They all have "secretaries" in the form of younger, more talented people that get paid under industry standards. There are some serious issues with turnover (really great talent keeps leaving) because of upper management. The place has a "bro" feel to it. One of the latest reviews mentioned that "not all white people are racist." Yes, ABECU has both race and gender issues. The attitude of the CEO and other upper management toward women and people of color is really poor. It's very white, very masculine, and stifling. The women in upper management roles are cutthroat. The CEO has no idea what a credit union should be. Furthermore I don't even think he likes St. Louis. Being from a city like Chicago you would think he would try to hide his dislike for this city but he doesn't. He is all about Sales, stats and making money. Growing and keeping a community presence is not a priority. As others have mentioned, programs are old. Computers are old. Pretty much everything is outdated.

Pros

This company attracts great and innovative talent because of their heritage however they don't retain it (I'll mention more in the cons). Benefits are decent however they effect employee pay rate. Don't expect to be particularly satisfied for long.

Cons

This company has all the appearances of trying to improve but they continuously fall short on fundamentals. They have very bad internal communication. Neither upper management nor HR acts on ideas or criticisms even though they have policies for such things. The truly innovative people in this company are at the bottom and what's innovation without the possibility of execution? People are promoted to management out of convenience not generally because they deserve it (or would be good at it) leaving some bitter and others overly inflated. The take-home pay is very low but they say it's comparable to the banking industry when the benefits are considered (note: the salary for positions that are not "banking", like IT, is not comparable to the IT industry but the banking industry which means they don't generally retain valuable people in these fields). In summation: Upper management does what they want, HR doesn't listen or act, there's an overall "bro" mentality, good people leave and there's lots of drama due to unhappiness.

Pros

Health care is good, most co-workers are great to work with but those are becoming less and less.

Cons

Where to even begin. HR for starters. HR has continued to go down hill over the past 3 years. They bully and push good people out. They do not care about long term employees and loyalty, they just want people who won't ask questions while promoting an open and honest policy. Now they are forcing an attendance policy where you can easily be fired and good luck working with benefits about any LOA they don't know what they are doing. Branches are being forced into a pushy competitive sales culture. They can't get new hires in due lower than average pay which causes most support front line staff to work at a bare minimum constantly. They continuesly load over performers with more work but pass them up for promotions.
