Pros

Pay is good, though it should be to try and retain talent.

Cons

Hostile environment where there is no transparency or collaboration, internal teams all play the blame game, weak conflict-adverse managers let the politics affect staff morale and engagement as they provide no support. Everyone has an opinion, many hours are wasted debating over the smallest of issues where the collective salaries of everyone involved would far exceed the actual cost of the issue being debated. No appetite for innovation or fresh ideas, as there are individuals in middle management who perceive these as threats to their little empire. Never hear from the CEO, c-suite or even middle management, not even a simple hello as they walk through the office and this non-communication flows all the way down to the frontline where no one talks to eachother and no one really has a clear idea of what their role is or how they contribute to the overall business. There are no processes in place for anything, everyone does their own thing without proper consultation resulting in mismanaged, overtime and overbudgeted projects to justify staff time. A "run it to the ground until it breaks" attitude, very little investment is actually put back into maintaining the roads, despite being able to hike up tolls every quarter, then blaming third party maintainence contractors for subsequent failures. Culture is the worst I have seen, dictated by a few egotistical middle managers who run the old boys club. All new starters who arent managers dont even get allocated a desk to sit at on their first day and some leavers dont even get a thank you or a goodbye from their line manager. The entire business model would not survive in a real industry.

Pros

Nice offices. Working in the project management group , I have met some great cross functional teams that are willing to work with you even though their superiors are against it.

Cons

For a small company - the politics and hierarchy is unbelievable. You will be told that only senior management can speak to senior management and what you say carries no weight even though they know you are right. If you must join, avoid Technology and Procurement at all cost. Tech is plagued with politics and visions of grandeur by middle management. Senior management will turn a blind eye to bullying and at times encourage it themselves. Open office belittlement and threats are a common theme. Procurement's biggest issue is their management team. The guys and girls at the coal face are fantastic to work with but they are burdened by incompetent leaders. If you want to meet a group managers who have been promoted beyond their capability and walk around all day spewing corporate nonsense from a textbook - feel free to join the team. Also expect no support as they are happy to throw their people in front of a train at the drop of a hat

Pros

Free bean-grinder coffee machine and bowls of sweets put out regularly.

Cons

Strictly hierarchical - management frown on you talking to any manager above them. Senior management doesn't talk to you, you don't talk to them. Bully culture - I have regularly seen first hand many fear tactics used like job loss threats, surprise firings, public belittling, ambush meetings, reports skewed intentionally to make other people and teams look bad. Selective treatment - Contractors and onsite vendors are treated as badly and they do take the fall for permanents, who are impossible to let go. Churn - Particularly in IT, some teams have a large amount of staff turnover. HR don't have the skills or tools to curb the knowledge walking out the door and it's frustrating to watch. There are only a few teams that are stable, so if you are being hired off the street, it's likely you are moving in to a high churn team. There is a reason for the churn, so proceed with caution. The only people not looking to leave are people that are new, those that don't know any better or those who are probably getting paid more than they should.
