Pros

Have daily fun collaborating with highly skilled, high energy, happy individuals and International and local teams. Work with like-minded, pet centric, problem-solvers. So much reward comes in enabling more pets everyday to access unexpected veterinary treatment when they need it. You will help pets, their people and vet teams all at once! Get to use your iniative! Can bring your pet to work.

Cons

I am not allowed to work on the weekend. :) Not enough pets in the AUS office. :)

Pros

Fully remote if you live > 25 miles from the office. Lots of pet pictures. That's it.

Cons

Pay is significantly below market averages for comparable roles. Bonuses are NOT guaranteed and many positions had them taken away indefinitely due to the companies inability to manage it's reckless spending. Benefits are so far from competitive it's not even funny. No 401k match, no tuition reimbursement, no cost sharing for dependent premiums (it is currently over $1000/PER PAYCHECK to add medical coverage for your spouse and children). When the company has been repeatedly, for years, asked to provide these benefits, particularly affordable dependent healthcare premiums, C-level attempts to gas light everyone and gives bureaucratic non-answers. Mediocrity is encouraged because high performance standards might make people feel threatened. Managers have zero leadership experience or business management education and were largely promoted due to nepotism. Positively toxic work environment. TLDR - If you want to get paid the bare minimum and don't anticipate ever needing dependent benefits, this might be the place for you. If you want to be treated like a human being, don't walk, run away from this place.

Pros

The dogs and individual contributors are GREAT. I stayed far longer than I should've because of them and because I do truly believe in the mission and think the product is the best on the market.

Cons

Truly a soul sucking, miserable place to work. Marketers are not allowed to use their brains at all. Our job is to take orders from rude, disrespectful company leaders who are not marketers, and if you try to use your brain and provide any thought into how to make a campaign/piece actually successful, you are fired. You are a glorified Xerox machine. The Chief Product Officer is a veterinarian, yet for some reason he makes all marketing decisions. He should have absolutely no say in any consumer marketing, but for some reason, his word is the final word and all you can do is cross your fingers that our regulatory compliance team nixes his ideas. From him and field sales leaders/reps (mind you sales, not marketing), we're told what words to use, what images to use, and how to design everything. Want to use your education and years of education? Look elsewhere! You're treated like dirt and given no respect. Hell, they fired an entire team in one day who had no leader for over a year and outsourced all of their positions (this includes a woman on maternity leave who gave birth less than a week prior.) Honestly, save yourself the anti-depressants and years of therapy. Do NOT work here. Leadership is woefully incompetent. It truly feels like an authoritarian state. Disagree with anything? You're fired. We are given no resources, no means to contribute expertise to our work, we're constantly putting out fires that could've been prevented, oh, and we're bonused based on enrollment metrics and yet we cannot run the tests and campaigns we believe in and instead are told to go in directions we know will not work (and surprise, they don't). When those campaigns don't work, of course it is our fault even though it was a creative decision we vehemently opposed. I could really keep going, but seriously, trust me on this, do not apply for a marketing role within this company.

I want to first take the opportunity to thank you for your open feedback and for the time you spent working with us at Trupanion. Second, I want to say it was truly tough to read your feedback about your time in the marketing department. I won’t use this forum to address specifics about why decisions were made or what that meant for you; some very difficult business decisions were made though and that impacts peoples’ lives. What I will say is that we do really care about our team members, including those we’ve had to say goodbye to. Given your tenure at the company, I’d imagine you have a lot ideas on what you think we can do better. If you’re open to it, please email me directly to set up a time to talk. You can reach me at bryn.lansdowne@trupanion.com.
