Pros

• Fast-paced environment. You learn a lot in a short space of time. • Equipment and software is kept up-to-date. • Decent resources available for designers. • Most of the staff are in the same boat as you, so you can make some good friends. • It's possible to get on in the company, but only if the MD likes you.

Cons

• The job is made unnecessarily stressful by the MD, who is very demanding. He can often fly off the handle, to the point of threatening that jobs are on the line. This can unsettle workers for weeks at a time. • Turnaround of staff is appallingly high as a consequence. This is throughout the whole company structure. It’s not uncommon for 2 or 3 people to hand in their notices in the same week. • Staff can be sacked for not working fast enough. New starters are particularly at risk. Some have been known to start work on Monday morning and be gone by Wednesday lunch. • You are expected to work unpaid overtime if the MD is unhappy with how many print runs there have been that day. Usually it’s an hour, but it can be longer. It’s pretty standard to work 3-5 extra unpaid hours a week with no thanks whatsoever. • Very little compassion shown by MD and senior staff. If you are ill, they make you feel like it’s your fault. • Expenses are hard to claim back. The MD likes to hang on to the money for as long as possible. • Pay is at the lower end of the scale.

Pros

The office staff are nice, that's it!

Cons

Very unorganised. Stressful environment. Boss isn't at all nice, shouts and swears a lot. I would go as fair as saying a bit of a bully. Very unprofessional. HR woman no idea and no support...works in favour of the boss not the employees. I wouldn't work there again if I was desperate. VERY HIGH STAFF TURNOVER!!! STAY AWAY!!

Terrible Workplace Environment

Pros

Fast-pace environment which does allow for quick learning. Most employees were around my age at the time which made it easier, and you can make good friends. Now that I've experienced this early in my career, I know what a good workplace environment is and would know what to avoid instantly.

Cons

I cannot stress how badly the staff is treated. There is absolutely no respect from higher management and especially the MD who quite frankly, is nothing but a bully. He would often just shout at people across the office, in front of everyone else to reprimand a specific person. This has happened on several occasions, and with the use of swear words and very insulting remarks. He does not work to realistic deadlines. There is no work-life balance in this company at all, and zero compassion or understanding when it comes to your private life. Forget asking to leave early for a doctors appointment, it will be a no. Holidays need to be put in at least 4 weeks in advance, even for one day - which makes it difficult when there is no flexibility for life around work (eg doctors appointment etc). Often asked to work over hours (including past 10pm, Saturdays) with no pay. When sent out to offsite meetings, the company would not pay for any expenses (tube tickets, refreshments etc). Management would not talk to staff in a nice manner at all. Pay isn't great, at the lower end of the scale. There was no recognition when a project went very well, but as soon as something went slightly wrong, you would get reprimanded. If I could give this company no star, I probably would. It's a shame as the job is alright but this is just no way to treat people and I wouldn't wish this on anyone.
