Pros

Unico has portfolios of some of the most dynamic markets in the country. Above market salaries and generous benefits package make them even more appealing. Year one accrual of 20 days of PTO is a nice surprise in an industry that often offers no vacation in the first year. Sustainability measures are a hot topic, however the wheels and budgeting move slowly.

Cons

Blurred lines of responsibility and unqualified individuals in leadership positions creates a culture of duplication of efforts, long days, indecisive or conflicting messages from decision makers. Recent growth prompted some accounting policies & procedures being implemented. Really helpful and clearly documented.

Toxic work culture

Pros

There aren’t many! Good benefits and a few good people.

Cons

Where to start: The culture is very toxic. Be prepared to be in therapy due to the work place. There were a few of us. Managment likes to get their subordinates drunk, then ask them questions to use against them and their coworkers. Was told by management that non management was not approved to be hanging out together outside of work, with out a manager around to chaperone. (First and foremost as hourly employees you cannot dictate what is done outside of work hours. Secondly unofficially punishing employees for hanging out together is uncalled for. ) Your promotions are dictated by who in management likes you. If you refuse to play the political game, you will not be promoted. Their are a few individuals in upper management that refuses to acknowledge anyone below management level. Even if they report below them. In meetings employees and vendors would talk negatively about the homeless community. People opps aka HR is not in every market.

Pros

Some really great coworkers and projects. Health benefits were good.

Cons

Cut 401k matching, yet still had the budget to cater numerous weekly meals in the main office. No work/life balance; I was managing a workload that would have previously been divided amongst 3 people. No snacks or drinks in my office location. Absolutely no flexibility to wfh, unless you work at corporate or in accounting.

Thank you for sharing your feedback on your time at Unico. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed your work and your colleagues. We always look forward to our monthly breakfasts at the corporate office, for which all Seattle-area employees are invited to join. The experience you further describe is not representative of Unico or what we strive to be. If an employee is struggling with their workload or has improvements to suggest for their department, we encourage them to discuss that with their Manager or People Operations so that we can find a solution together.
