A lot of unmet potential

Pros

Some great people to work with. Depending on the team, there's little to no micromanaging.

Cons

The organization is incredibly unorganized, yet upper management appears oblivious to this major issue. There is a severe lack of cohesion between teams and processes, with individuals often following their own methods, leading to frequent confusion. People are leading departments or teams without a clear understanding of their roles, exacerbating the daily disarray. Most departments lack a clear career progression path, and annual raises are minimal. Numerous employees from various departments have voiced concerns, noting that most raises in 2023 failed to keep up with the high inflation rate. Additionally, significant pay disparities between departments have been highlighted repeatedly, yet no action has been taken. Despite financial struggles evidenced by recent layoffs, the decision was made to invest heavily in office space, abandoning the company's original remote-first approach. There is no reason to be in office and seems to only be required so those that have minimal social life outside of work can have some semblance of social normality through forced interactions throughout the day. Clients are still handled via Zoom, making the office environment disruptive and impractical for frequent client calls. Working from home would alleviate these problems, but instead, we are compelled to stick to outdated ideas about what defines a "grown-up" company.

Do not recommend if you are a woman

Pros

There are many employees at Unit that are pleasant and want to do the right thing.

Cons

(1) The culture was toxic for most women at Unit. Women faced implicit bias, micro aggressions, and inequity frequently, if not daily. As a result, many strong female workers left. (2) The executive team seemed to be more concerned about outward appearances than employees’ well being. (3) The knowledge gaps were astounding, particularly since a large portion of the company was not based in the United States and lacked baseline knowledge of the requirements for financial services in the US. (4) The manner in which certain male executives spoke to women that were trying to help and/or advise them was alarming and not acceptable. The executive team often categorized these as “cultural differences” rather than acknowledging there is in fact an issue with how men treat and speak to many women at the organization. (5) The people function was not effective. I raised issues and concerns about diversity, equity and inclusion many times - nothing was done. I had concrete examples for said concerns, and they were ignored. There also was not any programming for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the US. (6) There was not work life balance. Every team was extremely under resourced. The employees doing the day to day work were always drowning in work. (7) Numerous women in the organization were never recognized, or provided opportunities to be leaders, even though they were excellent, over-qualified candidates for leadership. These women had great track records and data to back them up, but the executives did not provide them with the opportunity to be a leader. (8) The lack of processes always alarmed me.

Pros

The mid-level ICs and lower-level mgmt are the most enjoyable people I have ever had the privilege of working with - Unit hires excellent people. Product is cutting edge; very reliable.

Cons

Newer requirements to be in-office contradict the premise under which many people were hired. Leadership does not understand the pain-points of day-to-day operations... too focused on selling to new clients; not enough attention on making sure existing clients are happy and successful. Many efficiencies lost; untapped potential; lots of room for improvement. Product is being pulled in one very specific direction leaving very few to no resources to support existing products. Toxic leadership... becoming very hierarchical. Perhaps a result of growing so quickly... what was once a very flat organization (something Unit took pride in) is now feeling very tall. Corporate Culture has been lost and/or forgotten; employee engagement is no longer a priority. Annual review process and raise fell short of expectations.
