Pros

Good paid, no OT paid restriction if you OT. Instant promotion when you qualify. Numerous good knowledge management available online.

Cons

1. Section manager are typical Singaporean kids- obedient to Department Manager. 2. One colleague make a mistake, Department Manager will set new rule to follow. 3. Department Manager always right, he is the law regardless any official contract you have signed with UMC. 4. Lack of official training, they just give you some one and only sample to execute even you do not have any experience to handle it, if failed, Mis-Operation will be issued. 5.Forced staff to execute not reasonable timeline project by asking you possible timeline, if you propose 3 month, they say too long. Keep ask you discount till their desired timeline. Afterward, they took your words say you have committed to the short timeline. 6.Tons of not reasonable rules to obey, if someone accidentally break it, more new rule will be set. 7. Multiple miscellaneous side activities, paper work, checklist to be take care. If missed, money penalty will be execute. 8. Old equipment that always down, but they will ask you QBQ( Question Behind the Question) what can I do to complete my task even equipment down. But seems the management never QBQ themself. 9. Force employee to disclose their personal issue, then make an announcement at laboratory. 10. Difficult to take leave, numerous rule even with flow chart.

Pros

only pro i can think of is nothing

Cons

management with no management skills but only technical skills who are mostly parachuted from Taiwan. High turnover rate. UMC loves to hire those lousy universities outside fresh graduate as engineer-->low productivity and professionalism. My advice to my fellow singaporean engineer is do not join this 'sweat shop', you will have zero work life balance!

Pros

- free recreation facilities, eg: badminton courts, billiard and table tennis. - place to work till retirement, if you are not pursuing career advancement. - a lot of OT, good for fresh graduate to earn more money, management will think that you are hard working instead of efficiency. - In-house cafeteria, food allowance, cheap price.

Cons

- A LOT of Toxic, political work culture. - Supervisor are really micro-management, arrogant and unhonest enjoying taking people at their back. (maybe not all, guess only my team does). - Doesn't really work like a high-tech engineering company, lots of old fashioned middle management who sticks with antiquated process. - 'Clique' culture. Employee from certain cliques tend to band together and promote their interest. - Cronyism, favoritism, recognition is based on superficial factors rather than merit. Example the 'CHARMERS' are likely to get promoted over the competent. - Unreasonable, unfair performance evaluation, review based on hearsay, and who you know, who you hang out with, in the company/ department / team. - project...project...project... many projects are non-sense, only put up for show, cheating for job grade promotion. Again, only the 'CHARMERS' are selected to participate in the project. - Nationality-bias, Taiwanese hierarchy culture, this is a pure Mandarin speaking company, most of the top management is from Taiwan and China, inter-grade promotion difficult and depending on top management .
