Pros
Decent pay. Decent benefits. Good co-workers. Free covered parking. Reasonable work hours. Working more than an 8 hour day is only rarely asked. The 'UPI culture' is that mediocrity reigns so if that's your style this employer is for you.
Cons
My management manager chain is atrocious. I stopped counting how often I caught them lying to me or heard about them lying about me to others to cover their own mistakes. Ethics and morals don't exist for this chain and they will happily lie to you or even suggest you lie about something if it helps their purpose. The management incompetence level is also well beyond anything I've seen in my 17+ years working in IT especially considering the pay plus bonus they make. They will tell prospective employees there is development work and training but the IS policy is they actually do not develop their people so the only training received is on the main financial application used and the only development is done by consultants or contractors leaving the FTEs to clean up the mess and support applications they have not been trained on at the drop of a hat. Programmers end up just being glorified support/help desk. The environment there is always very secretive and there is no transparency. Management is always trying to keep secrets and rarely is input ever sought from the employees. There is no trust in the abilities or in general in the worker bees in the trenches every day who have the expertise and the end result is decisions made and promises offered that lead to major issues down the road on projects and very low employee morale. I've never seen a worse management style. Unless you live on the east side of town you will have a very difficult commute. It's a very tough location to get to and at this time they do not offer working remotely. They are trying a 'pilot' telecommuting program but the Gestapo like guidelines the HR and management expect those in the pilot to follow are at the time of this writing forcing those in the pilot not to sign the agreement. They even expect and have suggested people sign even though they disagree with the agreement because 'most likely the rules wouldn't be enforced anyway'. More ethics issues. The 'UPI culture' is that mediocrity reigns so if you are the kind of person that likes to excel this employer will rub you the wrong way. There is no accountability for mistakes, errors, or lack or responsiveness so the cycle of low quality work and missed deadlines continues.
