Pros
There were no significant advantages to this role. The salary was below market average, and persistent staff turnover led to a constant increase in workload and responsibilities that often fell on me. There was a consistent lack of training, guidance, and support from both colleagues and management. The only positive aspect was ultimately being able to move on from the company after nearly eight years of dedicated service. Even after that length of commitment, no final review or exit meeting was conducted.
Cons
The work environment was extremely toxic and reminiscent of a high school dynamic, where favouritism and internal cliques determined professional opportunities. Those outside the preferred circle rarely received fair treatment. Salary progression, bonuses, and recognition were reserved for a select few, regardless of actual performance or contribution. Certain individuals were allowed to openly bully or humiliate others, often depending on the preferences of management. Employees were routinely expected to take on excessive workloads, often compensating for the lack of competence or effort from others. This was compounded by a culture of weak management, where inappropriate behaviour was tolerated, accountability was absent, and staff were pressured to work nights, weekends, and bank holidays without recognition or appreciation. Safety procedures were inconsistent and often deprioritised, creating unnecessary risk for employees. Additionally, the company conducted annual “Anonymous Employee Opinion” surveys, but staff who provided honest feedback were reportedly identified and faced negative consequences if management did not like their responses. Overall, it was an unhealthy and demoralising workplace, driven by favouritism, fear, poor safety practices, and a culture that punished honesty rather than promoted professionalism. Unless someone is comfortable working in such a toxic and hierarchical environment, I would strongly advise against considering employment with this organisation.
