Toxic and political workplace

Pros

Pay is pretty good Remote work is nice

Cons

This is not a healthy company. Beware if you’re interviewing here and make sure you do your research. The work climate is toxic and political. Management will lie directly to you without batting an eye. If you’re looking for a startup, I suggest you look elsewhere. There’s new leadership hires every 8 months, so be prepared to constantly pivot as yet another initiative is abandoned. Morale is incredibly low. The product is in a poor state and there’s constant pressure to say it’s not. The closest mental imagery I can conjure is doublethink in 1984. Look at the glassdoor posts here: you’ll see they are heavily batched together, and are almost exclusively from a year ago. Since then there’s been round, after round, after round of layoffs. I wonder how many of these people no longer work here?

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. While it is hard to hear about your experience, your insights are crucial in our continuous pursuit of a better workplace environment. We value transparency and want to highlight the steps we're taking to continually improve our culture. 1. Cultivating a Supportive Environment: Since our early founding days, we’ve set out to build a positive and collaborative foundation for our culture and this mindset continues to be at the forefront of our daily operations. Regular feedback sessions, open “Town Hall” forums, and individual mentorship are encouraging a supportive work climate. They do require active participation from each team member — meaning people need to raise their hands and help flag areas that still need improvement. We are grateful for the engagement of our team in this area and continue to strive to ensure everyone feels encouraged and comfortable voicing their concerns. Our People Team is actively working on this area. 2. Organizational Stability: Like many other tech companies, we were forced to do a round of layoffs in 2023 due to the SVB bank crisis. We recognize that seeing some of your colleagues leave—or perhaps even being asked to leave yourself—must have been a very difficult experience. Our management team took multiple measures to reduce the impact (for example, by personally taking pay cuts and actively helping departing employees with job referrals). We wish we could have done more, and we welcome your feedback on how we might have better handled this situation. 3. Leadership Consistency: As a fast-growing and fast-moving startup, we continue to revise our approach to leadership transitions. We are striving for smooth integration and support for new leaders, to ensure a seamless transition and an overall positive experience for our entire team. 4. Product Development: As any company at our product development stage, we are moving fast and remaining nimble when it comes to building a product that meets our customers’ needs. This may require occasional retrospections and pivots, and we strive to do so while maintaining clarity of priorities and alignment within the team. 5. Employee Well-Being Initiatives: To achieve progress in the above categories, we invest heavily in providing our teammates opportunities to build connections, have fun, and get support when needed. This is further supported by our flexible work arrangements, fully remote environment, annual company retreats, team off-sites, and recognition & mentorship resources. Your feedback confirms we’re focusing on the right areas, and also sheds light on ones that require further attention. We are committed to continuous improvement and are grateful for your input as we strive to create an even better work environment. If you have any additional comments, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at sasha@vareto.com. Thank you once again for your valuable feedback. Warm regards, Sasha Martin, Head of People

Thank you for your feedback; we appreciate your insights. We're glad to hear you found our team supportive, enjoyed the network of finance professionals, appreciated remote work flexibility, and valued our competitive pay. We are also happy to hear that you believe we have a talented team. We are proud of the incredible group of people who choose to work at Vareto, and we strive to recognize and empower them every day. We recognize that there’s always room to grow when it comes to culture. Here are a few actions we’re taking to provide teammates with a stable, supportive, and empowering environment despite the high-frequency changes typical of a startup environment: (1) clear performance expectations during the hiring process and after joining Vareto, (2) additional leadership training for people managers on giving frequent feedback and better support their team, (3) special handling for cases where a teammate is assigned to a new manager to ensure that there is continuity of role expectations, feedback, and support. In addition, our People Team provides ongoing resources (including an open-door policy and an anonymous feedback tool) to all team members, to provide support and encourage open communication. We welcome feedback, ideas, and suggestions at all times. Looking ahead, we’ll continue to prioritize making Vareto’s employees feel supported and empowered to do their best work. If you have any specific suggestions or recommendations, we’d love to hear from you. Please reach out to me directly at sasha@vareto.com. Kindly, Sasha Martin, Head of People

No Focus + No Consistency + Poor Management = No Product

Pros

They pay is good and you'll meet some great people. Remote work is nice too. The times are good when you're empowered. That's honestly all I really have to say for pros.

Cons

The cons stem solely from poor management and poor product development practices. somehow management has instilled a toxic political culture in a young company, while simultaneously not being able to focus on building a core product that its customers need. the result is a house of cards floating on a limping sales and marketing motion, which is not sustainable. I found the team's heavy focus on sales and marketing odd considering that the product was nowhere close to appropriately serving its customers. There is very little consistency. Every week the priorities change due to a particular piece of customer feedback. The only channels I could see that drove product development were the CEO's vision (which was limited and not validated at all) and bits and pieces of customer feedback. Any deep customer research work the product team conducted was ignored from what I saw. The result was no real progress made on developing a product that actually solves a customer's problem. Additionally, every couple months or so there was a reorganization or someone mysteriously "mutually parted ways" with the company. One week you could be given a special bonus for stellar performance and the next you're border line getting PIP'd; all depending on management's feelings at the time. Overall, the main con is the inability to focus on/identify a customer need that they are able to execute against. Management's vision is not supported by any sort of deep experience in the area, which is a major issue for this type of product. Bonus: management would actually beg team to repost content on LinkedIn and leave good reviews on sites and sometimes offer gift cards in exchange. Very lame.

Thank you for taking the time to share your insights about your experience here. We genuinely appreciate your feedback as it helps us strive for continuous improvement. We put a lot of thought into designing our compensation philosophy and are pleased to hear that you found our compensation packages competitive. We’re also happy to hear you’ve enjoyed your interactions with our team members and our remote-first work environment. Regarding your observations on management and our product development practices, we acknowledge the importance of fostering a healthy work culture and aligning our strategies with our customers' needs, and we invite all employees to take an active role in flagging any misalignment or areas for improvement based on their individual experiences and observations. We are sorry to hear that you did not have visibility into the business value that Vareto provides to our customers. Perhaps as a former employee, you worked with us in the early days and didn’t have the chance to see customers start to engage with our product. Today, we are proud to have one of the highest customer ratings on a popular review platform and also numerous case studies with our happy customers. Your feedback on frequent reorganizations within the company and the potential impact on team morale is duly noted. We do our best to create stability and clarity in roles and expectations while also acknowledging that fast-growing startups often experience growing pains and frequent operational changes. Your advice about trusting our hired team, listening more attentively to customer feedback, and aligning our actions with our stated values, resonates deeply with our commitment to continuous growth. We continue to take steps to ensure that we foster an environment of trust and open communication, where all team members' voices are heard and valued. We have implemented several tools to achieve this, including but not limited to establishing an anonymous feedback process, monthly company town halls, and regular prioritization discussions to ensure everyone is aligned. We realize that no organization is perfect, and we’ll continue to work on improving in this area. If you have any additional comments or questions about the efforts we’re making, please reach out to me at sasha@vareto.com. Thank you once again for your valuable feedback and for being a part of Vareto’s journey for over a year. We wish you success in your future endeavors. Best regards, Sasha Martin, Head of People
