Changing the stigma associated with mental illness
Pros
The staff and leadership team have always been accommodating with my schedule. I was able to complete my Masters degree and hold a full time position at Vincent House with the support of my colleagues and directors. I found a passion for mental health advocacy and can proudly say this was the best job I have ever had. As with any transitions among leadership, new procedures and ideas start to emerge and takes time to adjust. Both the former and current directors are dedicated and driven to help serve as many members as possible, and my enthusiasm for this line of work is a direct reflection of their passion. I have made life-long connections within this company and I have plans to open a Clubhouse similar to Vincent House in my home state. Overall, the current director is hardworking, passionate, accommodating, and consolable when issues arise. She is the first one to jump in and help out when asked. I’m eager to see where she takes Vincent House in the future. I was also given several traveling opportunities throughout my time at VH to connect with other Clubhouses around the state and opportunities to go on company outings- such as viewing a NASA space launch from Kennedy Space Center. There are many opportunities to take advantage of and grow your expertise within this company if you want to. Positive and uplifting atmosphere Directly impacting lives of individuals Fulfilling work Fast-paced environment Non-monotonous, everyday looks different.
Cons
This is a non-profit organization so do not expect to make money- however the organization does have room to grow with yearly bonuses, COLA stipends, as well as merit bonuses. There can be as little or as much responsibility as you wish to take on as a rehabilitation specialist. You get what you give. There are a lot of reports that need to be done in order to secure funding sources. These reports can be time consuming- however, usually many staff and members work together in order to ensure the reports are completed on time. If you have previous history of severe mood disorders, issues with emotional regulation or mental health conditions this may not be a good fit as you are interacting with members on a full time basis and it can cause burnout (as in any MH field) and or trigger not only yourself but the population that is served. The PTO policy is terrible.
