Not As Great As Others Claim

Pros

A start-up like atmosphere, with a lot of energetic, motivated employees and growth potential.

Cons

We are encouraged to leave positive reviews on here so keep this in mind when reading the others, especially those that say there are no cons. Every organization, no matter how great they are, has some cons. They pride themselves on the workplace design and atmosphere but it's horrible. Open floor design with bad acoustics so it's hard to focus due to a loud environment. Not enough meeting spaces, so we're often forced to meet by our cubicles. This disturbs everyone around, and we have to be careful not to share sensitive information that others can easily overhear. This makes the meetings unproductive. Hiring process needs to be improved, seems that some are simply not qualified for their positions and got them based solely on who they know. A lot of employees with egos, that repeatedly talk about where they worked before (Uber, other Virgin brands). Being that it's a new organization, they want to make a good impression with the leaders and as such often make decisions that are best for them, rather than what's best for the organization.

Pros

The pay is good and I enjoyed the gym near the office.

Cons

Money is not everything and it took this position for me to learn this. There is a lot of gossiping and office politics. Some employees are overworked and others literally do nothing for 8 hours. The HR team is very rude and are part of the rumor mill and I once had questions about my pay and the payroll team made me feel like I was doing something wrong just because I asked questions. I know a lot of people in my department are looking for other jobs because they feel that leadership does not care about them. Also, they claim to accept all types of people but once you work there you can tell that this is all superficial. I appreciated working with some of my peers in Marketing and IT.

Pros

Fun being part of the Virgin brand, neat office, travel opportunities.

Cons

Richard Branson once said "Clients do not come first, employees come first. If you take care of your employees, they will take care of your clients." Virgin Voyages painted itself as a company that adhered to this quote, but the longer I was with them, the more it proved to not be the case--they'll take away your off days for "required overtime" with no rhyme or reason, and don't seem to care about the fact that you're meant to have a life outside of work. They'll breach your work contract by suddenly opening on company holidays, with no indication that they'll reimburse you that holiday, then subtly threaten that if not enough people volunteer, you'll be forced to work...on a day you were told you were going to have off. Not to mention, the communication is absolutely abysmal. I was told three different things by three different people for the same situation. I was also told certain things in my training, only to be told it's wrong later. They seem to be busier than they anticipated, which has caused some schedule changes--which is fine! Good for them! But they've been absolutely terrible at relaying this to us. They'll change our whole schedule for the week with 48 hours notice, and leave us to re-plan all of our appointments and off-day errands...with no remorse, either! They also do not listen to their employees. They claim "Family Love" but I've yet to see it. The employee base collectively complained of being tired, overworked, and understaffed, and what did they do? Released a big promotion earlier than normal! Real nice "Family Love" there. All in all, the upper management has some serious work to do. If they want to market themselves as a company that gives a single hoot about their employees, they need to start acting like it.
