Pros

- meaningful work - many amazing coworkers - providing essential services to people that need them the most

Cons

- pay is not worth the cost to your mental/physical health - chronically short staffed - verbal abuse & bullying - physical assaults - frequent medical emergencies - deaths of clients IMPORTANT: - lack of real support (e.g. mental or other) from any level of management in the aforementioned situations - neither verbal or physical violence is taken seriously - mgmt dismisses pleas for integral trainings: no real de-escalation training through work-place, no mental health crisis training, no anti-racism training, no gender identity training (all requested numerous times), no self-defense training despite frequent physical altercations - rigid top-down structure in organization - futile union - the 'idea' of Wish seems to have become more important than the organization's clients, its work or its workers

Pros

This organization does incredible work in the DTES community and beyond. They are committed to created a space that is welcoming, patient and supportive of all participants that fit the WISH mandate. This was my first mental health related job and kicked off my career that ultimately landed me as a social worker. I have great appreciation for the support managers, the floor team and participants provided for one another.

Cons

The pay has since increased, however while I was employed I found that the pay did not reflect the level of work required. Further, as usual in front line work, there was a very high volume of turn over and this at times made the work feel uneasy and workers not properly supported. Further, on many occasions, the shifts were understaffed.
