Government Dysfunction at its Finest

Pros

The salary for the most experienced hires was on par with local employers. The benefits were decent.

Cons

The lack of leadership from the top down creates a host of problems for employees. There are numerous silos and the day to day feels more like a small town employer. Their lack of process and employment policies make it feel like they are 15 years behind the rest of the world. In many departments there is a toxic work environment in which retaliation is common. There is no attempt to improve employee engagement or set higher standards for managers and their teams. It all results in a very dysfunctional work environment. Those who try to improve the situation are met with heavy resistance from long term employees. No rewards and recognition program. No incentives to do better work.

Poor work environment

Pros

Provide services to the community.

Cons

High turnover rate of competent management and staff. Outdated systems, processes and procedures. Budget cuts every year due to shifting funds for purposes other than providing core services for the community. Poor work/life balance due to unsustainable long hours and burnout. Political and fear based culture. Many failed recruitments due to HR only allowing the hiring of candidates at lower pay rates. Qualified candidates either do not apply, reject the low pay offers, or stay temporarily until they find a better job.

Pros

Great benefits and flexibility. And ample opportunities to learn and grow.

Cons

Management and leadership is incompetent and oblivious to what goes on to day to day. Most people in government aren't motivated to improve but rather just there to get a paycheck and hit retirement where they get the state pension. It's jarring to work in this environment if you're driven to improve and do better.
