You Can Do Better

Pros

There are a certain amount of nice and talented people there who also can do a LOT better than Weblinc who are great to be around. Their bread and butter is to take on people without the education or experience for a real tech job and slowly grow them up to know Weblinc and RoR specific skills. So if you don't know much, this could be the place of your dreams.

Cons

The reason they take on people who don't know what they're doing is that they create a crop of individuals who are devoted to the company. "They took a chance on me" is a common thing to hear people say. Most people don't know enough to switch out of RoR. They end up staying at Weblinc their whole career. This is great for weblinc because they actively don't want too many smart or educated people since most of their work is slavishly boring and unskilled. Note however, that there are a number of people who are very smart and skilled. These hold the responsibility to keep everything running and do the more skilled work. The place is filthy. There are roaches. Nepotism and chaos abounds. Loud, foul-mouthed, drunkards are the celebrated norm.

We happily accept all levels of criticism towards the company, but we do not appreciate the judgment of our staff. When feedback is pointed directly at employees instead of the company, it is difficult to see any part of it being helpful. Mutual respect for one another is a key principle of WebLinc’s culture. If you’re not willing to respect your teammates, it’s clear we weren’t the right place for you.

Pros

On paper, the benefits look good. I work with many very nice people. My macbook pro is very good and very nice.

Cons

The problem with Weblinc is diffused through its structure. The flexible work-from-home policy results in employees showing up to the office infrequently. There isn't any standardization around remote-work software, and the patchwork of applications in use fails to provide any sense of presence to remote employees. There is a lack of communication from management regarding expectations of remote employees. These factors combine to result in deeply ambiguous policies and wildly disparate disciplinary outcomes for workers. This is a pattern at Weblinc, and it is widely present in the elements that comprise it's organizational structure. There is a lack of standards. In place of standards, there exists a unmanageable patchwork of ad-hoc solutions. Management then fails to address the resulting problems, and ambiguity and unpredictable outcomes result. This pattern is present at Weblinc in every department I have interacted with.

Structure, standardization, protocols, and similar aspects mentioned here take time. We appreciate the feedback, especially as an existing employee, but this would be much more useful to bring to our attention internally. We know there is lots of room for improvement, and we're taking action. I'd love to provide more info so please, come ask us!

Pros

Flexible work schedule and good work life balance. Working from home policy is liberal.

Cons

Very high push for employees to be billable and very little reward for hard work. Everything is a secret... there is actually a governing body called, 'The Council'. Spooky. Seems to be very little strategizing at the top. We've never had a company goals discussion. Some managers have tried but without alignment with the company's direction it seems moot.
