Pros

- WEST's clients are (mostly) great.

Cons

- Extreme favoritism. - Zero accountability for upper-level staff. Supervisors regularly take credit for their subordinates' work and blame subordinates for any issues that arise. Staying in Matt and Ari's good graces is all that matters. - Office culture is nil. - Work/life balance is nonexistent. - Overwhelmingly white. Just look at the team page. Efforts to improve diversity have been ham-fisted and tokenizing. - Pay is laughable compared to similar firms. - Have personally witnessed multiple screaming arguments between staff members. - Leadership abides terrible behavior by clients, including (but not limited to) verbal harassment towards staff.

Pros

The company manages to attract excellent early to mid-career talent, and has a good mix of about 40 non-profit clients (down from 60 a year before). Staff works hard and most (not all) clients treat staff with respect. Work is interesting, but consists of 90% media relations (contrary to "full service firm" claims).

Cons

Following a business downturn, the company has for over a year now decided to save on labor costs by completely abandoning a 2:1 staff to client ratio, leading to insane work hours, unsustainable pressure, declining quality of work, declining client retention and a complete breakdown of work-life balance. Long hours are not uncommon in the industry, but are offset by rapid promotions, healthy bonuses and a positive culture and perks. All of those are completely absent at WEST. Less than 20% of the company was promoted in the last 18 months, and all 2023 bonuses were either cancelled or down to a fraction. A small clique of favored employees received sizable bonuses for non-performance special projects, at the expense of everyone else. All of this has resulted in 75% of the mid-level employees quitting in the last four months, as well as nearly 70% of junior employees and almost 40% of leadership.

We truly appreciate your honesty in highlighting critical areas where we need improvement. We are aware of the challenges caused by our previous staffing ratios and are actively working to improve this by hiring additional support and striving to offer a sustainable workload for everyone. Transparency in the promotion process and bonuses is also a priority for us as we move forward. We are in the process of an externally conducted compensation study and review for equity. We are committed to learning from our mistakes and creating fairness and clarity in these processes.

Pros

- Many of the clients do interesting and important work. - Newly renovated office space in a great location off the DC Metro.

Cons

- Toxic workplace with zero respect or accountability from leadership which leads to consistent turnover. - Work/life balance is nonexistent. - Associates are blamed for anything that goes wrong and there is accountability for VPs & partners. - The ONLY time I ever spoke one-on-one with the CEO was the interview process and my first day in office. There is zero interest in forming or maintaining collegial relationships with entry level employees at the firm. Matt claims to have an open-door policy but conducts no proactive outreach to any of the entry-level staff. - The favoritism is insane. Staying in the CEO's corner 24/7 and serving as his lapdog is literally the only path to promotion. - Some associates have been with the firm 2+ years and have received no form of advancement or promotion.

Thank you for your honesty. It's clear we have significant work to do, particularly in improving our leadership and management development. Currently, all senior leaders, including the president, are undergoing intensive training focused on engagement and respect to ensure all team members feel valued and supported. We are working with an external HR firm to track our progress and hold our team accountable.
