Newspaper in decline

Pros

Great co-workers all striving to put out a daily newspaper and website under continuing difficult circumstances. Talented journalists and graphic artists working together and doing their best work while facing challenging work conditions.

Cons

Employees have had to accept cuts in wages and hours, as well as a loss of health benefits and matching retirement funds. Job layoffs are now the norm, and many long time senior employees have either left the newspaper or have been let go to save money. This is also the fourth straight month that payroll has faced a delay of several days.

Poor Management Practices

Pros

Started out good... No real dress code

Cons

Terrible pay far below the standard, no medical benefits, no raises, no bonuses or profit sharing, multiple pay cuts. This place is circling the drain. I'm glad I got out when I did. I wish I would have done it sooner.

Pros

It is a job. We do have sick leave and vacation pay.

Cons

The company couldn't care less for its employees. We are overworked and underpaid. Our checks are almost always delayed due to lack of money. There are dedicated, hardworking employees working for Western Communications who are under appreciated.
