Pros

- Connect with like minded individuals in your cohort - A handful of staff are delightful despite the company's troubling framework especially Adam - CEO is a kind and charming, who regrettably took on a not so great company

Cons

I regret to say that my time with Xander Talent is riddled with disappointment and disillusionment. The company's inability to offer a solid training programme was a significant letdown. Rather than being structured and comprehensive, the training was haphazard and far below par, forcing me to self-educate and grapple with obstacles that should have been tackled during a formal training period. The management of assignments and deadlines was nothing short of a shambles. With no marking or feedback offered in a timely manner, I was constantly ensnared in a fog of uncertainty, causing unnecessary frustration. Deceit and misrepresentation were, sadly, commonplace. Initial assurances of potential placements within the company were revealed to be baseless, as the bench was already overflowing with consultants who could not be placed, leaving no room for newcomers. This dishonesty was a glaring sign of the company's lack of integrity, resulting in wasted time and efforts on my part. Even when bench we all lacked faith in their ability to place us. It was common practice for consultants to be on base for 6 months then suddenly let go for 'lack of effort' or what other excuse they could come up with at that time. Adding insult to injury, the training period was unpaid. This not only raises serious questions about the company's confidence in its own curriculum and placement abilities, but it also revealed a worrying lack of regard for its trainees' time and effort. The most unsettling aspect, however, was the manipulation of our two-month unpaid training to bolster their B-corp status with social enterprises. We were seemingly used as pawns in a game of corporate reputation, with the company benefiting from our unpaid labour. This exploitation was not just unethical but profoundly discouraging. In light of these experiences, I am left with a bitter taste and a stern warning to others. Unless you are willing to navigate through a maze of deceit, mismanagement, and exploitation, I strongly advise against considering Xander Talent as a launching pad for your career. It is far from the supportive, honest, and growth-oriented environment that one would expect from a professional talent development company.

Pros

The consultants I met both in training and on the bench are very kind and helpful. It is a shame they are in this predicament. The charitable project during training can help some companies

Cons

Xander was, for me, a huge waste of time, money, and effort. Reading the job description, they claimed that they would kickstart your career in consulting and that "extensive" training would be provided before a 2-year placement. I was initially very excited to read this and applied, quickly going through the process before getting an offer. As with anyone, before starting, I looked at the Glassdoor reviews and did see some concerning reviews with quite a few likes; however, I saw some of the replies by the company saying they changed (not true, lol), and being a relatively young person who just got a “career” in consulting, I tried to look on the bright side and ignored them, which in hindsight was a big mistake (most of the negative comments on Glassdoor are accurate). This review is my opinion of what I witnessed. The training itself is 6 weeks long and is split into 2 weeks of consulting and 4 weeks of technical. The training was a massive disappointment, as firstly, the technical side is taught by previous consultants who are on the bench and not by an ‘industry-leading training team’ as they claim on their website. It is also not comprehensive because, let's face it, you are not going to learn SQL, Python, or whatever else they have on the job listing in any meaningful way in 4 weeks. The consulting side is average and the only time where we are taught by a trainer however the slides are quite outdated and there are a lot so you won’t remember most of it but you will get the gist of what is being discussed. I later found out that the academy was 9 weeks long, and for what seems like a short-sighted cost-cutting measure, they cut it down to 6. It was no wonder that, through no fault of the consultants on the bench teaching us, they had to rush through quite a few of the slides due to the tight timing. Because of this, you will also have to study and complete assignments in the evenings to be able to submit them on time on Friday midday, which is very stressful because you don't have time to actually learn the content in detail but just find a way to submit something that can be marked. There are many cases of consultants staying up past midnight to complete their tasks. Keep in mind that we also have a charitable project that we have to start and finish in that time frame as well. The placement rates are pretty poor; last year, a lot of companies stopped hiring and a lot of contracts were cancelled, so loads of people were laid off. I understand that a lot of other consultancies were caught off guard as well. However, what I find most appalling is the fact that Xander continued to run its training academy. They kept thinking that the economic situation would improve so they would take on people, but when it didn’t occur, these cohorts were either cut entirely or only a few would be given contracts. This happened multiple times last year and this year as well. The people who come to train are either career switchers who quit their jobs or graduates looking for a break in data or software consulting. To be told after you went through an unpaid academy (spending all your savings on travel as an investment in your future) that business is not going well so you won’t be taken on is very stressful and detrimental to mental health (this is very ironic because Xander claims they care about wellbeing when in reality the source of the stress is the company itself) because now you have no job, have a feeling of worthlessness like you are just a number and betrayed. Still, of course, Xander doesn’t care. What I find especially sad is that despite the company preaching about increasing diversity on their website and job postings, those people are the ones who are primarily getting screwed over by Xander's failed promises of ‘kickstarting your career in consulting’. The salary you get on the bench if you do make it there is abysmal. It is close to the minimum wage, and there are no other benefits apart from perkbox (which is terrible). Furthermore, you are trapped with huge training fees that are predatory and unjustified because the training in my opinion is inadequate, rushed, and run by previous cohorts. It is just used as a way to control and stop consultants from leaving, but if Xander wants to let you go, then they can. More often than not, you will remain on the bench for many months before getting laid off. It seems like more people have been let go than placed since the company's inception! Even if you do ask the successful ones who are on placement, they will most likely say a lot of their cohort is still on the bench or has been let go. Even this year, there have been multiple layoffs with consultants, with the most recent one being in May. Management is not safe either, as there are people who have left for other jobs (lucky ones) without their posts being filled or have been let go by the company. You are always worried that you may be the next one, and you can't make meaningful connections with people because they may be the next ones out. There is also not really any direction on what you should be learning while on the bench (as expected because of the lack of a technical trainer will knowledge in the industry). In conclusion, I do not recommend Xander to anyone. A lot of their claims on the job posting are frankly false. Do not be like me who just ignored the red flags everywhere the moment I got the “job” offer. The replies by Xander on previous Glassdoor reviews promising the changes that will occur have not come true. Please do not quit your jobs and move for this company; they will most likely screw you over. If you are a new grad you won’t find your break into the industry here. Every month, there are fictitious stories of clients that do not materialise and a slow bleed of consultants being laid off. Go instead to a company where you will actually have a decently paid job and not just be living in a shroud of uncertainty on the bench, hoping you get placed when most won’t. If you are still trying to figure out whether to take up this job or not, look at the other Glassdoor reviews and talk to current or former employees on LinkedIn to build a proper picture.

Pros

Some nice associates but this is not attributable to the company or it’s hiring practices.

Cons

Training: -Inadequate across the board: data training solely uses Simplilearn and other low-level companies and trainers. Software training is also subpar and you could do better through self learning, particularly since hiring in software is more competency based rather than certificate hunting. Change training is with a good trainer but the qualification isn’t the best or most well known one. Employment prospects -Sales duo is completely detached from reality and propagates unrepresentative projections. Even worse, they shift the blame to associates even though the whole company is built upon the founder’s connections. Complete lack of communication. -The work ‘on the bench’ (without client placement) does not help you prepare for real work and the day your formal training finishes your skills diminish daily. You get paid below london living wage whilst having to work as if it’s a real job otherwise the sales team don’t like you and it’s all over at that point. -Business change (rebranded to Transformation) has ZERO employment prospects, roughly 25% got placements in a 9 month timescale -Even though the company has some big 4 people, it is not in any way comparable -The non-associate team views you as disposable and do not appreciate you at all People management: -We have a few small awards for things like culture and employee development programmes but we don’t even have an employee development programme- these ‘awards’ are just essentially paid for and mean nothing. The fact it’s a B corp just devalues what a B corp is. -Essentially, the team do not care about you at all, apart from how much they can exploit you for profit. -CEO is a great orator but that just means he can manipulate you -Massive training fee repayments, you’re trapped if you accept that contract -No feedback or way to improve, team has no capacity to provide it -If they want to fire you, they don’t give notice and don’t even really need good reasons other than wanting to save money because they can’t actually sell you to a client -Not very inclusive, just tokenism

Thanks for your feedback! We’re extremely sorry that your time with us didn't work out. We’re a growing start-up that’s only been operating for less than 2 years and we recognise all feedback as an opportunity for self-improvement as we continue to grow as a business. We still have plenty of room for improvement - we accept this and are relishing the challenge! Purpose is the key driving force of our company, and at the heart of it is our people. We have already achieved B Corporation status and have received several industry awards – yes, we had to pay for our entry fees, that’s how it works, and we were awarded by a judging panel of industry experts. We already offer an awesome experience for our Associates, and we intend to make it even better! Here’s how:  From September 2022 we will be bringing our training programmes in-house, delivered by industry-leading technical trainers.  Our expanding People team means we will be able to strengthen the care and support our Associates receive whilst on a client placement.  We have introduced a Performance Management Framework to identify how Associates can improve and identify areas of focus for support such as further training.  Plans are underway to improve our “on-the-bench” environment, so that Associates can dedicate more time to skills-focused projects, hackathons and preparing for client engagements.  To add to our collaborative and inclusive culture, we have introduced an Associate forum and a DE&I council which will have Associate representation.  Associates will receive regular updates from the solutions team about new placement opportunities.  Finally, we are in the process of introducing Senior Consultant opportunities for Associates beyond their first two years at Xander! We’re also taking this opportunity to respond to some of the claims which we feel may be misleading to any readers. Employee Dismissals No former employee of Xander has ever been dismissed from their role without warning – period. Everyone received a feedback session with a senior member of staff who established a performance improvement framework and since then we have waived their training fees and offered them all professional references. Training Fees We’ve made a sizeable investment in each of our Associates for them to gain market-leading training. Whilst our competitors charge extortionate and unethical training fees of around £15k if an employee terminates their contract early, our Associate’s training fees are considerably less and are reduced every day they are with us until the end of their two years. This is consistent across many companies who offer training on the job and our recent staff survey showed our approach to be fair and reasonable. Placements We work tirelessly to secure Associates a client placement that matches their career objectives. We have introduced several clients in the past 12 months, from boutique start-ups to world-leading consultancies and companies and continue to work extremely hard to secure interviews for Associates with top clients. We go above and beyond to ensure that Associates are fully prepared for client technical tests and interviews, with one of our Data Analytics Associates having recently cited: “Xander were extremely supportive and guided me through the technical tests and interview process, helping me to understand what was required. Prior to the interview they helped me to practice my responses to questions, giving me the best chance of success.” Salary After their training, Associates receive the London Living Wage of £21k per annum. Not all businesses in our space provide this to “on the bench” employees and we are extremely proud that we are able to support them during the current economic climate. Once Associates secure their client placements, they receive a competitive salary of 28-32k per annum depending on their role and their time with us. We’ve done our research, and we know this is an extremely competitive salary for a grassroots position! Bench Time We have experienced increased bench time due to prolonged onboarding processes of our clients and the pandemic, but we have made significant strides to reduce this. We have already placed several Associates with a client before or upon the completion of their training and we have several multi-Associate placements in the pipeline which will guarantee Associates will transition from training to onboarding with the client immediately. Associates have been continually encouraged to allocate a portion of their week to upskilling, which Xander covers the costs for, and have been exposed to several internal project related to their new skillset, helping to nurture their communication and project management skills – skills that are crucial for a consulting environment. We are extremely pleased to see that our former employees have gone on to secure new employment with the qualifications obtained through Xander, and we wish them the best of luck in their new role.
