Pros

ZMP has very interesting projects and some good results in the robotics business but it is shadowed by serious issues. The company has kind people and there are a few engineers with experience in robotics. Field tests are regular in most teams so you can get out and have fun outside the office. A nice thing is that there are people from all over the world, so the company is very multi-cultural. ZMP can be a good place to start if you have no experience or if you are looking for an opportunity in Japan from outside.

Cons

First and foremost: against as advertised, ZMP is NOT a startup (by the western sense) and NOT a self-driving car company. It is just a small traditional Japanese company: lots of administration, it is highly inefficient and lacks proper human/talent management. It has way too many projects for only a handful engineers (lots of whom are inexperienced). The company mostly works like a university lab: no product management, lacks teamwork, code is often horrible quality, nobody cares about maintenance and they say yes to every offer/request that brings in money without thinking. The company distrusts its own employees which in return generates distrust in employees. Also, the office space is worse than most decent startups or well-going companies have.

Good landing company in Japan

Pros

People are very nice in the company and you will make good friends since the company is so multi-cultural. You will find people with common interests and definitely common things to complain about the company. Administration is friendly and open for discussion. People go out together from time to time. Some project topics are interesting and, if you are lucky, you will be working in something that might really interest you. The company is good if you like to work alone.

Cons

The administration claims to be open minded and they don't mind to discuss BUT you will hardly have something done in the end. In the end, the company makes decisions like a traditional Japanese company and some things take a very long time to be done. They say they are open for new project ideas but in the end it is extremely hard to start doing them. The reason is that it is very common to be assigned to multiple projects at the same time with no planning at all. This lead to some failed and/or delayed projects. Security measures are unforced by people who don't have experience and are not aware of the limitations that they might bring to engineers. The office is extremely unorganized and not clean. The company gives responsibility to employees to clean which lead to an extremely dirty and messy office. Regarding benefits, ZMP will not give one single extra day. There are no winter holidays (new year). You can only expect the basic public holidays + 10 days of paid vacations. There are no sick leaves. Regarding health insurance, on my job offer the health insurance was apart from my base salary but, in the end, it is me who is paying it and not the company.

International Environment

Pros

- International environment, not a typical Japanese tight environment, almost half engineers are foreigners, and the official language is english, it would be nice if you could speak japanese though but you can survive just fine with english. - although the official language is english, you can hear all languages in the company, french, chinese, malay - less work stress, you can leave by 6PM, you don't need to wait till after your boss leaves like typical japanese companies. - Cutting edge development in many projects, the company is targeting to build a profile as an advanced research company which means if you like you can get hooked to a research task - Many professionals and PhDs working there, you can learn a lot from them - Managers are nice, smart and understanding, at least most of them, maybe a few who are not though.

Cons

- Low salaries compared to other companies doing similar work, and it depends on your negotiation skills, which leads to inequalities and frustration - it's not just the low salaries, you don't get any benefits beside the salary, not even a respectful bonus. - Managers are more technical than managers, which affects managing of projects, this leads to the company being a mess, lots of failed projects and extended deadlines - bad management goes till up top, get ready to find yourself in a project that is short in resources, with no planning, no vision, and unrealistic expectations - no human resources at all, not career path planning, no skill development programs .. if you want to be good then do it by yourself, don't wait for the company to care. - Company is in an expensive area, with low salaries people have to live far specially if you have a family - new weird security measures related to network and company access
