Pros

Their business idea is a solid one and I anticipate it will continue to grow despite the issues within the company.

Cons

It's hard to know where to start really. - The codebase was poorly documented and exceptionally (and in my opinion needlessly) complex. Documentation existed sporadically in different places. Otherwise you were on your own. - The frontend especially was in poor shape, this was part of the reason I was hired. - Asking for help or clarification from other engineers was frowned upon and seen as a weakness by leadership. This was fed back to me directly from leadership while simultaniously my line manager fed back that it was very positive that I was so proactive in looking for answers. - The product strategy appeared non-existent. - The development methodology is best described as waterfall with standups. - Priorities could and often would change randomly. Giving the impression that leadership had no long term vision in mind and were just reacting at random. - You would spend a week on one priority only for it to be totally superseded on Monday morning. The expectation was that even if you had something in flight you would drop everything to go all in on the new priority. Any push back on this was seen as problematic. - The decision making for these priorities was totally opaque. - Blame was a core part of Product leadership's toolbag. - Any delay in meeting these randomly shifting often ludicrously lofty goals would be called out publically in Slack. - During my time there several people quit because of the conditions, or were let go. - It probably comes as no surprise that I was one of those let go. - During the firing process leadership lied about formally warning me months prior, which aside from them not doing, the timeline they claimed coincided with a performance review that was glowing. - They gave conflicting feedback on where it was I was lacking. - Ultimately during their feedback all I could discern was that my velocity was down, which is an odd metric with which to measure an engineer's worth. - When I pointed this out they claimed "There are other metrics" but refused to expand on what they were. For a company who's motto is "We care more" it is remarkable how little they care at all.

Hi, I was disappointed to see this review as it stands in stark contrast to the values and culture of the business & intentionally misrepresents the particulars of your situation. For those reading at home, here are the facts: -We have an incredibly supportive and high-performing engineering team. We are always there to support each other and are incredibly available to help answer questions. -We believe in a culture of trust, and as such, have a high degree of autonomy for our individual engineers and engineering teams. -However, when that trust is violated such as through conduct that is incompatible with our values (or really any businesses values), we'll have a firm but fair conversation about it and give an individual every chance to make it right. If that behaviour continues, as was the case here, we'll empathetically let the individual know that a role at Zen isn't right for them. We wish you the best of luck going forward. Best wishes, Slava Kremerman CEO

Pros

Haha, I am unable to think at this moment

Cons

My experience at Zen Educate highlighted some issues with workplace culture and communication that prospective employees should be aware of. The office environment felt quite cliquey, and it often seemed that success depended as much on fitting into certain social dynamics as it did on the quality of your work. At times it felt like you needed to “butter up” people in management and act as though certain behaviours were acceptable in order to stay in favour. Communication around expectations and feedback could also be unclear. In my experience, concerns about performance or output were not always communicated in a structured or transparent way. This made it difficult to know exactly where you stood or how you were expected to improve. A more open, professional culture where feedback is delivered clearly and consistently would make a significant difference to the employee experience.

Toxic work environment...

Pros

- great people (excluding the leadership)

Cons

- toxic work environment where people get promoted based on personal likings and not performance. - the leadership team does not know how to manage actual humans. - little to no flexibility in terms of wfh, this is also not universal across teams with some teams not being able to wfh at all. - Zen is extremely stingy and would rather sell their own kidneys than pay you more money so good luck getting a pay rise after some time - career development is always written big and there is a lot of talk about career progression but the reality is that there is no career progression for many employees, even if you are good and work your butt off. - to anyone reading this and considering working there, PLEASE don't, you can save yourself a massive headache. - God help you if you ever have a different opinion and dare to voice that - they HATE people who think for themselves and have different opinions and views - Zen looks great from the outside, but I have seen the inside and I am so happy to have made it out of there.

Hi, Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback. We note that you spent less than a year at Zen Educate so wouldn't have gone through any annual review or career progression conversations at Zen, so we were surprised to see your perspective on them. For those reading at home, we'd like to clarify: 1. We have an annual salary review process, where we offer meaningful salary progression based on performance. 2. We have a clear set of career pathways and progression frameworks where individuals can work closely with their line manager to progress in their career. In fact, the vast majority of our people leaders and senior management have been promoted from within. 3. We ACTIVELY encourage vocalising different opinions. A high performing team thrives when there is diversity of thought, perspective and skillset/background - having this as Zen is what makes us so successful. We wish you all the best in your career.
