Pros

Job without much pressure, and frankly low expectations!

Cons

The pro is the cons too, if you are ambitious enough, and are willing to step outside your comfort zone, and learn new things. The product is fairly basic, and there doesn't seem to be an interest in actually building a sophisticated ML product. The pivot towards point and click configuration to make the product pass as a SAAS seems like a major self goal to me! There has been a serious attrition where a lot of tenured people have either left or are in the process of leaving, which probably is largely because of 1. Very poor management decisions made in hiring and promotion. 2. The benefits and comp are nowhere close to standard tech comp/benefits. Missing 401K match, no maternity/2 week bonding leave, average insurance, no equity (post acquisition). Tuesday Tacos and Beer Fridays aren't real benefits! 3. Science is pretty basic so data scientists can get bored/disillusioned pretty quickly. The day to day tech stack is really dated and will probably set you back by a decade (imagine no version control/git in 2020s). Engagement managers use emails and one note and excel workbook for project management / documentation. Data Architects/Data Engineers do not use MLOPS tools, and largely write basic sql statements. If someone stays long enough, they might feel too dated to make the next move! 4. With lot of tenured people leaving, the doers feel the squeeze - the pressure of doing, and the blame in the face of things not going as expected. If you are buddies with right people, it’s easy to talk, collect paycheck, and fly under the radar while not doing much! 5. Abject lack of diversity and near absence of women in leadership roles - only marketing has women leaders. And the way things are going, I won't be surprised if the services org doesn't have any women in the very near future. Engineering already doesn’t have any. Two women is CSM org left citing nonexistent maternity benefit, and management seems happy about CSM org being a frat house. Poor Communication from management: people including managers left, and there wasn’t much communication to coworkers and clients about that until after the person was gone. Hiring is not only done when there is too much growth, but also when there is too much attrition. Wink Wink. HR doesn't mean just payroll and admin work. Missing HR supervision across groups means a lot of unprofessional behavior, and real issues like gender pay gap, poor pay parity across ethnic groups, and potentially EEO discriminations could fly under the radar. People worked their tails off when COVID hit, and everything was fine and everyone sang the Adult Culture song. Now there is a pressure from exec team / managers to ensure partial office presence, because presumably people aren’t being adults and interviewing while working from home ;)

Pros

I had the opportunity to work with some great coworkers during my time – but many of them have had to leave the company You get the opportunity to work with customers from multiple industries – so the inherent variety will keep projects interesting Benefits used to be very subpar but since the MDP acquisition, they now offer parental leave and 401k matching, which is great

Cons

Upper management is very disconnected from the day to day operations. In the science org, teams were understaffed starting in 2021. In one instance, management reduced the number of employees in an already understaffed team with no reduction in work and no plans on how the reorg would affect the team and customers – everyone in the affected team has now left the company. VP of Science only focuses on product development and avoids managing the team – but also does not give any decision-making power to the science directors. So all science decisions are made by VP in a vacuum since they are so disconnected from the day to day. And when scientists inevitably leave, VP says things like ‘I have no idea what they were doing anyway’ – too arrogant to realize that not knowing what their team does reflects badly on themselves vs on the team members that left. Many SVPs, VPs, and Directors (mostly in science) are doing individual contributor work. This is a major reason for little to no management. Adult culture/ no micro-management is nice but zero actual management is also problematic. Across the company, there is A LOT of favoritism. Many folks are promoted based on favoritism vs leadership ability or competency. This has also led to many employees across the company leaving. There is also a massive discrepancy in pay between employees in the same team as well as across teams. Generally, it seems like technical people are paid less than project/program managers. It sounds like MDP’s HR team might be working to improve these discrepancies. Very little diversity in the company and very few women in leadership.

Pros

Everyone below the vp level are amazing to work with. Tons of opportunities to meet customers from various industries.

Cons

Company Cons: This company has completely gone down in terms of work quality since the acquisition by MDP. Work life balance has completely plummeted as there is more pressure to increase margin, which is expected from a PE firm. Additionally, the turnover rate has been horrendous since the acquisition furthermore exacerbating the poor work life balance. The company is split into two teams. Those from the VP level up and everyone else; because of this there is little insight into which the direction MDP is pushing the company further leading to frustrations. Data science cons: As a scientist, no real data science is taking place here. Everything has been boxed up and put into “packages” that spits out numbers to tell if a model is good or bad. The science vp leadership is heavily focused on product development and the director is too busy working on projects to cover for already over worked teams so no real direction comes from them. Honestly there really isn’t a place to grow as an IC in data science. Overall: Frustration from the customer and employee side are mounting as new faces have to be brought on a project due to poor retention. Bugs are also significant and occur on a weekly basis for multiple customers. Benefits are no where near industry. 2 week maternity leave which is just enough recovery time for birthing parents and get back to work. No stock options and healthcare is expensive. Bonus is nice

Zilliant Response

Thank you for your feedback. We recognize that the Science team has recently experienced some attrition, and that has impacted workloads for the current team. A few things that we’re doing to address this: - We are building career paths to clarify roles and responsibilities and create various pathways for internal advancement. This will cover all levels of the organization, so everyone has a clear view of expectations and focus areas. - We are holding feedback sessions with the Science team to better understand what's working and what is not so that we can appropriately incorporate their feedback. - Our goal is to further productize our approach so that customers have consistent experiences while continuing to evolve roles to ensure challenging, rewarding work, and career opportunities. While we are naturally in a transitional period as a result of the MDP acquisition, customer success remains a top priority and core tenant of Zilliant’s culture. Additionally, under MDP’s leadership, we are proud to be able to significantly expand our employee benefits program, including a recently announced 12 weeks of paid parental leave for primary caregivers (and 4 weeks for secondary caregivers). We are also evaluating the rest of our benefits to ensure that our offering is not only competitive but appreciated and attractive to current and future employees.
