Huge Disappointment

Pros

Exposure to a scale-up Good office manager CEO respected but rarely seen in office Switched-on team who (once) gave a lot to the company

Cons

I joined flatfair partly because of the Glassdoor reviews, but these did not reflect my experience. Behind 'Friday lunches' and 'Puppies at work' is a weak structure, financial concerns and an increasingly unhappy and confused workforce. There was no real experience of professional Account Management from the COO - often felt more like a pushy sales manager than leader of a scale up. HR process and support was non existent. Multiple instances of sexual harassment and inappropriate behaviour were reported to management and these complaints were widely known to be suppressed & undealt with.

In the best instances these were abysmally handled. Obviously it is your choice but if you are a female I would be weary of joining for this reason. When complaints were made, about the above or other business related concerns, employees are essentially told to ‘put up or shut up’ making it hard for us to speak out.
No flexible working or WFH options pre-Covid, unless you had a 'good reason' (for example a doctors appointment). This would not be a 'con' had it not been sold in as a benefit during interview phase. This did vary from team to team, however. Constantly moving goal posts, restructures and KPIs, regardless of seniority mean it is near impossible to reach your targets. Even early employees are shown little respect for the work they have put in when push comes to shove. It was disheartening and sad to see how devoted employees were treated. People are let go randomly. You will notice a Slack profile deactivated and it will not be addressed management, just an empty desk and a quick company update in the morning.

Thank you for leaving your review. Our aim at flatfair has always been to create a safe and supportive working environment for our team, as we firmly believe our people are our most important asset. As such, we always welcome feedback we get from current or former team members about how we can improve. As a successful scale-up, we have enjoyed tremendous growth over the past couple of years. Inevitably, the impact of COVID-19 has meant we have recently had to make some incredibly hard decisions to ensure the business is best positioned to be able to respond to the changing needs of landlords, agents and tenants for the long-term. We firmly believe we have done that and remain committed to delivering the best for our clients and our team. In the case of any inappropriate behaviour by staff, we always take these matters extremely seriously and have a rigorous HR policy in place. If any of our team experience or see behaviour they believe is inappropriate, we actively encourage them to report it to us formally, either by speaking to their line manager or our dedicated HR manager. We hold all of our team to the highest standards and we have a rigorous process in place to ensure swift and appropriate action against any individual whose behaviour contravenes these standards.

Rapidly declining company

Pros

The people are generally friendly.

Cons

Lack of company culture - unless you count a weekly company update on a Friday morning as culture. No real career development or opportunities for progression. Occasionally they will change people's job titles and mask it as a "promotion" - but they'll often be left doing the same job as before, just with a more senior job title. Large amounts of staff turnover. In recent months, a lot of senior employees have either resigned, been pushed out, or have been made redundant - including the Head of Marketing, Head of Sales, Head of HR, Chief of Staff, and the COO/Co-founder. All of these were important employees, and none of them have been replaced - with the remaining employees having to absorb aspects of their role. No work-life balance. Everyone is overworked (and often under-appreciated). The company has given everyone a "wellness hour" each week - but irrespective of this, you have to work a crazy amount of overtime.

Thank you for your review. Like all businesses, ours has been affected by Covid-19 and we have had to restructure the team in various ways as a result. Despite the challenges of the last year (and we absolutely recognise these), our current monthly employee feedback scores are higher than ever, covering everything from alignment with our company mission, work-life balance and support from management. We are a small team, but we pride ourselves on pulling together as a tight-knit unit to achieve great things. Many employees have been promoted during their time with us and promotions represent meaningful progression within the business. We are also pleased to be welcoming a number of new joiners to the team over the coming months, including at senior levels, to fill various business needs. All of these individuals have stellar backgrounds and will undoubtedly make fantastic contributions to our business. We are sorry you feel disappointed by your experience with flatfair and we encourage all employees to put forward any comments or suggestions for improvement via our many direct feedback loops, including weekly anonymous questions for our CEO, surveys, and regular 121s with managers.

Great People, Bad Company

Pros

- Most of the team are great and you can find real friends here, just don't take everything at face value. - Most people care about what they do, enjoy it, and are good at it. - Good product but needs further development.

Cons

- Overworked and underpaid, the company expects long hours to be worked and yet offer lower than standard wages for most but not all roles. - Lack of a good benefits package. - Management is reactive rather than proactive. Personally, I'd say it's disorganized, lacks stability, as well as a clear vision beyond 'Do anything to hit the numbers investors asked for'. I understand the importance of this but there is more to a company than targets, especially when considering daily management. - As the company continued to scale, culture diminished. As an example, the core values of ' Honesty and transparency' were quickly exchanged for 'Secret conversations and apparent lies'. - Pre-COVID19 having any kind of work-life balance was near impossible. The budget for well-being/team bonding has continued to decrease per-head since my first day and is now basically non-existent. - Working from home did help with work-life balance, although, who's to know what the future holds when offices are back to normal. Previously working from home was not a given but more of a luxury. This was due to some members of management believing working from home was simply an excuse to do no work. This was regardless of how much-proven experience of remote/fieldwork you entered the company with.
